The Wiltshire Cup was presented to the League in 1892 by Mr C.H. Wiltshire and is believed to be the second oldest continuously contested Cup competition in amateur football. The Wiltshire family has also retained its connection with the competition and all things being equal Mr John Wiltshire will present the Cup and medals on Easter Monday morning at Great Yarmouth Town's Wellesley Road ground. John Wiltshire will be attending his 50th final and this despite his preference for the 'oval-shaped ball game'.

The original trophy was stolen in 1925 and the present one substituted long before players were allowed to be substituted! Mr C.J. Wiltshire and his brother Frank played for Great Yarmouth and Norfolk for many years but the family renounced skill and resorted to brute force and ignorance as John Wiltshire, his brother, son and grandson played or play rugger.

John Wiltshire says there must be a connection because some 40-odd years ago he was introduced to Leonard Hill, then a respected and very senior solicitor who had played for C.E.Y.M.S. and the County, coming into the game as John Wiltshire's father gave up. Mr Hill asked who his father had been and when told "Charles" he sat back and said, almost reverentially, 'My God, he was a 'roughhouser' To be called a 'roughhouser' by "Dutty Hill" as he was known, sent his father up in his estimation and perhaps explained why future generations all went to the other game.

John Wiltshire says he has enjoyed many years of invitations to the Finals, including the wonderful final of 1977 when Martham and Hemsby took the 'whole summer' and five games to settle their local differences and everyone got to know each other. Any game that you play is a good one and John Wiltshire adds that he hopes the players of today and in the future get as much enjoyment from this competition as they have given his family and hundreds of spectators over the years.

The longest winning sequence was between 1957 and 1962 when Gorleston United won an unprecedented six successive titles whilst at the same time winning four League titles and two League Cup wins. For the highest scoring final you have to go back to 1952/53 when Halvergate defeated Caister 6-3, while the only other team to score in a final were St Georges who beat Great Eastern Railway 6-1 in 1923/24.

Cobholm's penalty shoot-out victory over Prince FC last year earned them their tenth title with the first coming with a narrow 3-2 win against SM Rangers. This followed three successive defeats in the early 1980's as well as three further defeats in the 1990's but the Cobholm dynasty has included 12 League titles, as well as six League Cup wins.
