End of an era

The Division One programme completed on Saturday with champions Catfield being presented with the Division One trophy for the third consecutive season. Having thrashed Great Yarmouth Peelers 15-2 on Wednesday evening, Chad Pillar took his tally from 89 to 99 with no less than ten goals against Peelers and it took less than fifteen minutes on Saturday for Pillar to bring up his century for the season in all competitive matches – an amazing achievement in any era of the hundred years of the Great Yarmouth & District Football League.

The game on Saturday against Golfers Armswas a repeat of the HA Holmes Cup final with Catfield emerging 6-2 winners this time as two of this season's acquisitions from Gapton Car Hire – Dane Whiteley and Adam Hodds scored the other goals with Whiteley grabbing a hat trick. The game marked the end of two very distinguished reigns in league history as Golfers Arms' (formerly Prince FC) popular secretary and manager Alfie Thompson took charge of his final game, and Alfie's reign cannot finish without a special mention to Jeannette Thompson who worked just as hard as Alfie for the cause.

Also bowing out, or taking a back seat, is Mr Football himself, Peter Self. The architect of the enormous success of Catfield over the past three seasons, as well as many other previous achievements over the years, Selfy will not be as active with the club next season as work commitments will take up much more of his time. Another ‘legend' from local football will take over the reigns at Catfield; Andy Algar will step up from assistant manager to become the main man. Catfield completed their third season unbeaten in the league, winning 19 of the 20 games, only runners-up Arches earned a draw.

International crowned champs

Great Yarmouth International claimed the Second Division crown beating Prostar Windows 2-1 on Wednesday evening and picked up another three points when Carpathians were unable to fulfil their fixture on Saturday.

Clipper Schooner, barring a mathematical miracle, will finish runners-up despite losing their penultimate game 3-2 to Hemsby.

The end for Benny?

MK United Reserves completed their season with a 5-3 win at Martham A while Gunton had four players notching up doubles in their 8-1 win against Prince Consort, which may have proven to be Consort's last game, let's hope Benny Edgar can change that.
