Club Notes

Great Yarmouth International

This weekend Great Yarmouth International became champions of the Second Division without having to kick a ball. The Championship was all but secured last Wednesday when International beat Prostar 2 - 1 at the Rec to take our point tally to an unsurpassable 53.

Recently it had became all to routine for International but to be fair to Prostar they gave us a good game and kept us on out toes till the end.

If there is any team that play to let off steam then its Prostar and although the game was a little dirty it was played in a suitable competitive spirit, largely down to the superior performance of Peter Cater in the middle. Prostar are a team that play in and for the moment and this is reflected in some of the results they have had, despite their league position. Happily for us there was to be no vintage performance from Prostar as International played to our strengths and controlled the game in the most part. K Foster and F Pontes (pen) scored the goals to keep our winning streak going.

We were scheduled to play Carpathians this Saturday but unhappily they weren't able to get a pitch and so I have heard, have now folded. This was sad news as they had had some great results recently and we was expecting a good game, It wasn't to be and International were awarded the 3 points but strangely and unfairly this award wasn't a score result. However this was enough to secure the league title regardless of other results and International quietly celebrated our successful season.

Congratulations to Catfield and Arches who have both had an excellent season and if International want to progress to the next level were going to have to take form their teamanship if we want to continue being successful.

Winning the Division 2 title, in such stunning style, in what is the centenary year of the GYDFL is an amazing tribute to the ability and talent of our players, strong leadership of our manager and the tireless and earnest work of our administration. Whatever the future may hold for this team our hard work has ensured the name of Great Yarmouth International will never be forgotten.

Hemsby FC

In the final game of our season we played Shrublands and with a much changed team due to holidays we never really found any momentum from the start. Hemsby created a few chances as the half went on but found themselves 3-0 at half time due to some very good play by Shrublands.

At half time Hemsby changed things round drastically with the defenders playing in attack and attackers playing in defence. This took Shrublands by surprise and from a corner Gary Chaplin headed home to make the score 3-1. From an amazing run by super fast left winger Olley Bensley who skinned 3 players Hemsby were unable to find a finish for all his hard work. As the half went on Shrublands came back into the game and score three more goals to make the score 6-1. Going into the final 15 minutes Mark Haddow found himself through on goal to coolly finish but only for the goal to be ruled out for offiside (Mark you were offside by about 7 yards) which denied him his first ever goal (even though he has been playing for at least four decades). From the final touch of the game Cain Esherwood shinned in a goal to make the final score 6-2.

Man of the match this week for an action packed full 45 was the cheater Olley Bensley.

Hemsby would like to say thanks to all the players this season who have taken part this season.

End of season do is on Saturday 17th May at the Sunningdale which starts at 7.00.

Sunningdale

After last weeks cup final, the Sunny went into this game full of confidence and anticipation ahead of the final game of the season. This didn't rub off on the performance with the Golfers dominating in the first half. The Sunny kept battling away in the second half, and at times played some good football, with Larn grabbing a well deserved goal. The Golfers were to strong though, and end up running out 8-1 winners over the Sunny. This was a disappointing performance, especially after such a great game against Arches. Lets hope the team can build again for next season.

Clipper Schooner

With International having secured the league title and Clipper knowing the lowest they can finish was 2nd . Added to this the fact that Clipper had 4 1st team players missing, this was a chance for manager Roni Barber to reward the players that have been on the bench and thank them for their patience and support. With Wayne Dowler standing in for the injured Adam Bollington in goal and both of Clippers centre midfielders' missing a big reshuffle was required. This is taking nothing away from Hemsby who with players missing themselves gave Clipper a good game.

In an open game Clipper were pushing Hemsby back with some great flowing football and Hemsby were resorting to the long ball completely by-passing their midfield at times. Tony Norman & Ivany Cassoneca were solid standing in at centre mid and winning most things on the ground, and also at times showing great skill to carve out chances for top scorer Robbie Simnett & stand in striker Adam Bollington up front. With Roni showing strength in the air at the back supported by Andy Dixon cleaning up everything else Hemsby were just getting loose balls and not really causing Clipper back line too many problems. Clipper finally took the lead in the closing minutes of the half when a great ball released Robbie to fire home a cracking left footer. With Clipper still celebrating Hemsby grabbed an equaliser when Clipper allowed their top scorer Terry Whitehouse to tap in from close range with Wayne flatfooted.

Half Time: Clipper Schooner 1 Hemsby 1

Second half started much as the first half with Clipper getting the ball down early playing their way through the Hemsby team and Hemsby still resorting to the long ball game. Early pressure from Clipper created chances that were missed. Roni then decided to go off and give Ricardo Galante a run out. This meant Asst manager Tony slotting in at centre back and Jose Varela moving into the middle. This seemed to affect Clipper as they lost their shape and composure a little and seemed to take their foot off the pedal and allow Hemsby more time on the ball. Robbie was doing his best creating a number of chances for his fellow striker which all were missed. The best of these saw Adam head against the post from close range. Right back Bruno Carvalho un leased a rocket from the right that struck the bar. But he was not to be denied and another cracking low shot flew in for his 1st goal of the season. Hemsby to their credit did not give up and it was this fighting spirit that saw them deservedly turn the game around. With Clipper seeming on cruise control Hemsby started to find more space. But they were kept out by stand in keeper Wayne Dowler pulling off 2 world-class saves. A low cross was whipped in from the right and a great finish from Clipper centre back Andy Dixon saw Hemsby finally draw level. More chances were created from Clipper and a goal line clearance from Hemsby saw them keep Clipper out. Hemsby got their rewards from a corner when Clipper indecisions allowed Hemsby's Terry Whitehouse to head home for what turned out to be the winner.

Full Time: Clipper Schooner 2 Hemsby 3

Full credit to Hemsby whose never die attitude saw them grab the win. But if Clipper had taken their chances Hemsby know they would of suffered defeat. Thanks go to our opponents for a great game played in the right spirit. Mention also to referee Malcolm Hubbard for allowing the game to flow without too many stoppages. Every Clipper player played well but a few worth an extra mention. Wayne Dowler for some great stops, Ivany Cassoneca for a solid game at centre mid, Tony Norman for showing strength and skill at both centre mid and centre defence, Robbie Simnett for turning provider creating so many chances which went un rewarded, Bruno Carvalho for a solid game and 2 great strikes 1 which got him on the Clipper scoring stats. But man of match goes to young Phillip Watkins for showing experience way beyond his age with some silky skills linking up well and also showing strength and experience.

Shrublands

Last report of this campaign in Shrubs first season together playing in the GYDFL. Most importantly I would like to thank all the players who have played this year and who have helped to make this a very enjoyable first season. The standard of football this year from all the teams has been very high. I have seen the standard of football in other leagues and some players who would make you believe it is better. This is not the case and I would also add the administration of this league is very well run as is the quality of referees.

At times through the season Shrubs have played some really good football. Unlucky at times and other times we have road our luck. The younger players have grown in confidence this season and I hope the older members have enjoyed passing on their knowledge.

Saturday Shrubs played their final game for 2007/08 season against Hemsby. The first half Shrubs played probably their best forty five minutes. Wing player was brilliant with Dominic and young Billy using both sides to great advantage. Throughout the team in every position Shrubs controlled the game with crisp simple passing, quality attacking play, strong defending with numerous chances in front of goal. Shrubs came in at half time 3v0 up with goals from Secker and Hilly.

Second half Hemsby completely reversed the team and both teams had an enjoyable relaxed end to the campaign. Mitch and Secker added to the score, Adam Secker getting four to add to his tally for the season.

Final score Shrubs 6 Hemsby 2.
