Ninety-nine years and still going.

Ninety-nine years ago the very first Great Yarmouth & District League match was played and there can't have been many more opening days with so many close games. Two draws and three single goal-winning margins were the feature of Saturday.

Arches held champions Catfield to a 1-1 draw thanks to a goal from Danny Western as Chad Pillar replied for Catfield. Golfers Arms (Prince FC) shared the spoils with MK United in a 2-2 draw. Chris King and J Ross scored for Golfers with S Wilson and R Coe replying for MK United.

Two sides making their top-flight debuts shared the spoils in a tight affair. Great Yarmouth Peelers took the lead early in the second half when Matthew Buckoke crossed for Damien Minnis to calmly tap in for his first competitive goal for the club. Peelers could not hold out and Burgh Hall equalised from a corner through Dave Wadhams. Top flight new boys Caister United A made a winning start as a Scott George goal was enough to take all three points against Great Yarmouth Town Hall. Gapton Car Hire emulated England as goals from Adam Hogg, S Calver, Dane Whiteley, R Collin and Ashley Evans earned them a 5-0 win against Star & Garter (Feathers)

Prince Consort started the game very well with manager Kai Lake opening the scoring with a excellent left foot effort. Jamie Miller soon added to the score before new signing Ashley Linford scored with a left footer across the keeper making it three nil. Before the break Jamie Miller completed his hat-trick with Consort going in at half time five up. Martham A came out the second half a different team. Stephen Williams added to the score with a great left finish to leave Consort finishing the game 6 – 0

Last season's champions MK United Reserves narrowly won 2-1 at Reedham. Centre back Liam Nelson scored with a header to put the home side ahead however fast feet from Adam Conway earned MK a penalty from which Mark Miller equalised. MK started the second half slightly better and started to dominate possession and stole the winner through 14 year old Brandon Ingram

2-1 was also the score as new boys Carpathians were beaten at home by Hemsby. The first goal of the game came from some great work on the right side from midfielder Cain Esherwood who picked the ball up and seeing the keeper of his line shot early. The desperate dive of the keeper was not enough as he only managed to push the ball into the goal. Carpathians equalised through G Quinn, however Hemsby were back in front just before the break as Terry Whitehouse rose to beat everyone at a corner to find the top left corner.

The Sunningdale took an early lead direct from a corner at home to Albert Tavern but the visitors were soon in front through Robert Ripkey and Ross Charlton, however the home side levelled before the break. A double from last season's top scorer Daniel Charlton and another from Ross Charlton put Albert Tavern in control until a late fight back made the final score 5-4 to the visitors. Goals from Nathan Derry (2) and Ben Hall gained Gorleston Peggottys all three points as they won away to Star & Garter Reserves 3-1.

The day's top scorers were Great Yarmouth Peggottys who defeated debutants Burton Arms 9-0. Leading the rout was five goal Johnny Bowles with goals also coming from Danny Webster, Matthew McCreadie, Adrian Smith and Aaron Drewery. Tomorrow ten of the second sides start their Norfolk Primary Cup campaign with the only domestic tie between Reedham and Hemsby.

Clubs are reminded that referees are marked out of 100 this season.

Plenty of goals in week 2 of the season with two promoted teams Burgh Hall and Caister United A involved in a ten goal encounter. Despite a hat trick from Caister's Gary Ward his side lost 6-4 as Burgh Hall maintained their unbeaten start to the season. The prolific Ian Barnes grabbed four goals with the dependable Dale Crane notching the other two. Gapton Car Hire won a nine-goal thriller away to MK United. Two goals from Adam Hogg and one each from Steve Calver, Tom Norman and Ryan Jacobs just edged Gapton past MK. Tom Norman opened the scoring from the spot before Adam Hodds doubled the lead. MK hit back before the break and went ahead after the break with a Louis Miller double and were in front through Roy Coe. Steve Calver levelled things up with a thirty yarder before Hodds scored his second and the winner with a free kick. Both sides described it as a cracking game played in an excellent spirit.

Champions Catfield had a much easier time as four goals from Paul Thompson; three from Chad Pillar and one from Daniel Goodrum eased them past Golfers Arms 8-0. Arches scored once as they did last week and Great Yarmouth Town Hall conceded once as they did last week, for Town Hall the outcome was the same but Stuart Finch's goal claimed all three points for his side.

Great Yarmouth Peelers showed their resilience with a determined performance that saw them score twice in the last twenty minutes to gain a 3-2 win. Peelers took the lead when Martin Goulder seized on a short back pass to the keeper however Star & Garter replied immediately with a good goal from M Marshall. Star & Garter went ahead in the second half through a Aaron Lindoff goal from a corner before Peelers equalised through Jason Howell. Jodie Bailey scored what would turn out to be the winner as Peelers weathered some late Star & Garter pressure.

Better fortune for Star & Garter in the Norfolk Primary Cup as their Reserves won 3-2 at Wendling with goals from Luke Gibbs, Jamie McGettigan and stalwart Kevin Johnson. A missed penalty proved costly for Gorleston Peggottys as they were held to a goalless draw by Dickleburgh and will make the trip to their opponents on Saturday. Prince Consort endured a poor first half after the long trip to West Winch Reserves. A hat trick in the second half from Jamie Miller brought them back into the game but a sixth goal settle it for the home side although Consort completed the scoring with a goal from Stephen Williams. Martham A bowed out of the cup going down 6-0 at Hoveton Wherrymen Reserves.

Reedham overcame Hemsby in a tight encounter. Last week Reedham had lost 2-1 and Hemsby had kicked off their season with a 2-1 win, however this week it was Reedham who prevailed. Reedham scored straight from the kick off through Alistair McKenzie with a debut goal for the club before Hemsby battled back to level midway through the second period. A late winner came from Chrissie Newman capped off a good week for Reedham that saw them awarded Adult Charter Mark status.

In the only second game Great Yarmouth International made a winning start as they edged out The Sunningdale 4-2 in a seesaw match that witnessed an excellent debut from referee Daniel Wright. Some players needed to show the same composure as the debutant referee.

Clubs are reminded player registration forms must received by the League Secretary 48 hours before kick off, otherwise the form must be signed by an official from your opponents on match day and then submitted by the following Tuesday.

The first round of the Norfolk Junior Cup provided wins for Catfield, Arches, Gapton Car Hire and MK United and a second chance for both Golfers Arms and Great Yarmouth Town Hall. Catfield were the highest scorers hitting Thorpe Village for six with Chad Pillar grabbing a hat trick with two coming from Paul Thompson and one from Bevan Self.

Four goals from Tom Norman and one each from S Calver and A Baxter eased a weakened Gapton Car Hire into the second round at Rockland United. Doubles from Roy Coe and Louis Miller eased MK United to a 4-1 home win against Hellesdon. Arches travelled to Reepham and once again their mean, well organised defence were on form only conceding a solitary goal while at the other end Danny Western, Steve Crosby and Darren Bexfield ensured a happy trip home.

Golfers Arms required a thunderbolt free kick from defender Tristan Haudiquet to earn a draw and a replay on Saturday at Hereward Wiggenhall. A game of eight goals and three penalties ended all-square and a replay for Great Yarmouth Town Hall against UEA. New boy Karl Bewes netted twice with strikers Jamie Gallant and Vinny Ruggerio also on target.

Gorleston Rangers went out with heads held high as they lost 3-1 to Great Yarmouth Reserves and a two-goal losing margin was the outcome despite goals from Burgh Hall's Ian Barnes and Dave Wadhams at Drayton. Great Yarmouth Peelers also lost 4-2 at home to Dereham Town A. Star and Garter lost 6-3 at home to Downham Town Reserves.

Draw for Second Round:

Wymondham Town Res v Freethorpe

Caister United v Diss Reserves

MK United v Kings Lynn A

Arches v Great Yarmouth Reserves

North Elmham v Catfield

Buxton v Gapton Car Hire

Great Yarmouth Town Hall or UEA v Hereward Wiggenhall or Golfers Arms

Burton Arms are finding life in the Great Yarmouth & District League tough as they conceded nine for the second time in two league outings. MK United Reserves coasted to victory with goals from Harrison (3) M Miller (2) Conway (2) R Martin and Davison. Reedham continued their promising start to the season with a 2-0 win against Carpathians. The deadlock was broken on the hour mark by Alistair McKenzie with Chrissy Newman confirmed the win with a second goal ten minutes from time.

Great Yarmouth International scored four in their debut match and conceded four in losing their second so it was no surprise on Saturday when they drew 4-4 with Martham A. That was far from the whole story as Great Yarmouth International before Richard Barnes equalised for Martham with a well-taken goal. Just before the break Mark Holsworth scored with a powerful free kick from inside his own half that the GYI goalkeeper could only help into the net.

Shortly after the restart Matty Emmett scored to make it 3-1 before Jonno Rowland made it 4-1 with a well taken free kick. GYI were not out of it and yet another penalty brought the score back to 4-2. This seemed to rally the visitors who made the score 4-3 with 10 minutes to go. Then finally a disputed goal in injury time gave the visitors a share of the points, which on the balance of play they deserved.

A draw was also the result in a see-saw game between The Sunningdale and Prince Consort. Prince Consort were one up after just ten minutes and in the second half they doubled their lead. The Sunningdale started a comeback when David Pasco scored from outside the box. A deflected cross from Pasco hit a defender on the back and curled in the bottom corner to make it 2-2 and it got even better when substitute Jason Witheridge followed up a shot which the keeper parried out and Witheridge chested in Then the luck changed and from a cross from the left took a wicked deflection off centre half Craig Sharman to leave the final score 3-3.

Albert Tavern started the game brightly at home to Hemsby with Ross Charlton hitting a quick fire double within the first 10 minutes. Daniel Charlton added the third before half time with a well taken left foot shot. Hemsby improved in the second half but late in the second half conceded a fourth through an own goal.

Gorleston Peggottys maintained their 100% record against Great Yarmouth Peggottys. With Gorleston playing the usual passing football they started off brightly when Tom High found the opening goal. Yarmouth soon equalised through Johhny Bowles from a corner. Gorleston regained the lead just before half-time when Dan Porter scored with a one on one with the goalkeeper. Gorleston increased their lead when High volleyed a great cross from Adam Pope at close range. Yarmouth made it a tense finish when Adrian Smith pulled one back with ten minutes remaining.

Gorleston Rangers got their league campaign up and running with a 4-2 victory against Great Yarmouth Peelers who slumped to their third straight defeat. Two goals from Michael Vincent and one each from Scott McKay and Keith Vincent secured Rangers their first points of the season.

Arches good start to the season continued with an impressive 6-1 win against a struggling Star & Garter who have lost their opening four games. Two goals from both D Crosby and Danny Western and one each from Stuart Finch and Craig Cutajar ensured Arches stand second in the first division.

One point back sit Catfield after a 9-0 demolition of Burgh Hall. There were hat tricks for Paul Thompson and Clint Bilyard as well as strikes from Paul Bunce, D Hurren and Chad Pillar. MK United leap frog Caister United A following a 5-1 win after goals from A Hogg, R Coe, L Miller, A Howarth and C Collings.

No success in the two replayed Norfolk Junior Cup ties as Great Yarmouth Town Hall went down 3-0 at home to UEA while Golfers Arms equalised through Trett at Hereward Wiggenhall before going out through a cruelly deflected goal after a spirited display.

Reedham progressed to the third round of the Norfolk Primary Cup for the first time in many years. Goals from Grant Lloyd and Liam Nelson saw the score at ninety minutes stand at 2-2. Reedham dug deep in the extra period and a goal in each period from Alastair MacKenzie and Kevin Yaxley eventually saw off Sporle 4-2.

Four goals was a feature of Saturday's Primary Cup ties with MK United Reserves winning 4-0 against local rivals Star & Garter Reserves. MK never looked back after taking an early lead with an excellent strike from Matty Chandler. Goals followed from Adam Conway, Jamie Harrison and Brandon Ingram. Great Yarmouth Peggottys returned from Cockers 4-1 winners but Gorleston Peggottys were not so lucky losing by the same score at Erpingham United as they missed several key players.

David Pasco put Sunningdale one up after a long journey to Denver Bell but were soon 3-1 down before Pasco reduced the arrears with a long range effort. Just before the break Denver restored their two-goal advantage. Leon Tomasso brought Sunningdale back into contention but despite creating chances they equaliser eluded them.

Albert Tavern produced some of their best football of the season to win 9-1 at Cromer Youth Old Boys as Scott Charlton grabbed four goals and Daniel Charlton completed a hat trick from the spot. Jamie's Brown and Hopwood completed the scoring. Carpathians had a tougher time at Saham Toney Reserves losing 7-0.

On the league front Burton Arms collected their very first point scoring first at to Martham A. Top scorer Richard Barnes leveled the score before the break with a fine volley from a corner and after the break Martham stepped up a gear and Nathan White scored with a good header at the far post to put Martham 2-1 up, but Burton’s equalised late on.

Hemsby's top scorer Terry Whitehouse put his side ahead just before the interval but Prince Consort were level early in the second half when young Jamie Miller netted for the eighth time this season. Whitehouse then completed his hat trick before Michael Harvey once again brought Consort back into the game, but it was Whitehouse who had the last say netting his fourth.
