Dear Sir

For various reasons I`ve decided to try and trace back MORTER as far as possible. Before my father died in 1975, I was working in Cannes, France; and he used to remind me to locate a `Chateau Mortier`. He insisted that it was located along the `Oise` or the `Loire` in France, and we were descendants of French Aristocracy! Before I could do anything about it , he died, and I had to return to England. I am now retired and have time to have a go now!

So far I`ve been lucky, a Morter from Norfolk about 10 - 15 yrs ago, sent me a family tree showing our particular line going right back 7 or 8 generations to a `Philip Morter` from Long Stratton near Norwich; he died in 1722 !! He wanted me to fill in any info I had as regards my generation. Thank God I filled in details of what I knew, sent him the necessary copy and kept one for me. Unfortunately, I’ve mislaid who he was and where he lived exactly, although I seem to recollect that he was a vicar. I`m now in the process of trying to locate him, so that I can go back further.

Whilst I’m doing this, I hope to collect as much data about our family as possible; and in particular, each of our direct Great Grand Fathers. I wonder if you could help me, by filling in as much information as you can on the Pedigree and Data charts enclosed, any info about MORTER would be really useful. Perhaps someone else in your family has already done some work on this. Our other Great Grandfathers, I think, lived in Hethersett near Norwich {4 of them}, Norwich and Ipswich. At some stage I intend to visit these places to find out more. I`ve since found out that a Sea Admiral MORTIER fled the Catholic / Huguenot conflicts in the 1600`s and settled in Beccles in Norfolk, most Morters in England live in and around Norfolk !

Thanks in advance for any help that you can give, and please indicate if you would like any feedback.

Yours Sincerely

Peter Morter
