EVERY LITTLE THING WE SAID TODAY

RECORDING CHRONOLOGY:

PART FOUR : TOURING THE WORLD

Order of Data: Date, event or title, takes recorded, lead singer, writer (s), where recorded, unusual facts, instruments played (if other than Paul on bass, George on lead guitar, John on rhythm guitar and Ringo on drums), and release dates. BOLD TYPE = Released to the public in some form, i.e. single, album, CD or "bootleg" (album, CD or tape), regardless if it was a record, filmed concert, or a recorded and/or filmed interview or press conference.  S: = Who sang the lead  W: = Who wrote the song. (I’ve tried to determine who really wrote the song and how much he contributed.  Sometimes I might say “McCartney” alone when the record or CD gives “Lennon/McCartney” credit.  This is based on interviews with the Beatles, etc.)  S = Single  A = Album   Bootleg = Recordings that have not been officially released but can be obtained by the enterprising fan via the "underground", the Internet, etc.

The Beatles go on their fifth British Tour.  On the program are the Rustiks, Michael Haslam, Bob Bain, Mary Wells, the Remo Four, Tommy Quickly and the Sounds Incorporated.  The Beatles will use some or all of the Sounds Incorporated in future recordings such as "Got To Get You Into My Life".

I FEEL FINE (Takes 1-9) (Master take: 9) S: John W: John Lennon The first recorded feedback. John and George on lead guitar. Written by John at the "Eight Days A Week" session, it reached number one on 12/26/64. The opening note is a sustained low "A" on the bass as a foundation for John's plucked electrified-acoustic guitar feeding back through his amp. It was discovered accidentally by leaning his guitar against the amp. It was his Gibson J-160E that had to be replaced after it was stolen backstage at a concert. All takes had the feedback beginning. The song boasted one of the most imaginative and innovative guitar riffs up to that time. Or so we thought. John sheepishly admitted once in an interview that it was a direct rip-off of the riff in Bobby Parker's song "Watch Your Step". Takes 1 and 2 are run-throughs with John singing. Take 6 had the background only and sounds good except Ringo is still not doing the tom-snare beat which is on the completed record version. Take 7 is complete with the final drumming and all the vocals. Take 8 was an aborted overdub. Incomplete takes 1 (done in "A" instead of "G") and 2, complete takes 5, (minus ending) and 6 and overdub takes 7 and 9 were all bootlegged. S-11/23/64 (US), 11/27/64 (UK) A-12-15/64 (US) Bootleg
I'LL FOLLOW THE SUN   (Takes 1-8) (Master take:8)  S:  Paul  W:  Paul McCartney  Paul on acoustic guitar, Ringo on bongos.  (No takes were bootlegged.)  A-12/4/64 (UK), 12/15/64 (US)
EVERYBODY'S TRYING TO BE MY BABY (Take 1)  S:  George  W:  Carl Perkins   John on tambourine.  (Take wasn't bootlegged.) A-12/4/64 (UK), 12/15/64 (US)  S-UNK/82
ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC  (Take 1)  S:  John  W:  Chuck Berry (Chuck Berry is 38 today.)  John, Paul and George Martin on one piano, although author Lewisohn says "No dubs."  That would make Martin the sole pianist.  (No bootlegs.) A-12/4/64 (UK), 12/15/64 (US)
WORDS OF LOVE  (Takes 1-3) (Master take: 2)  S:  John and Paul  W:  Buddy Holly   Ringo on plays “drums” on a suitcase or a packing case trying to duplicate the original sound by Cricket drummer Jerry Allison.  Whatever he uses has a loose fastener, which makes a noise.  (No takes were bootlegged.)A-12/4/64 (UK), 12/15/64 (US)

TICKET TO RIDE  (Takes 1-2) (Master take: 2)  S:  John  W:  John Lennon (Written partially on an airplane over Kansas while on US tour according to TV interviewer Larry Kane.)  Paul on the opening riff and the middle lead on his Epiphone Sunburst Casino E230TD, George on lead guitar at outro, or ending riff, (George says Paul played both), and Ringo on tambourine and handclaps.  George uses his 12-string Rickenbacker 360/12 guitar.  Paul said this about his Epiphone Casino, "If I had to choose one electric guitar, it would be this."  Apparently John and George agreed.  They bought one too. This is the first Beatles’ track to use "varispeeding", i.e. slowing down the recorder on record and playing back at normal speed on playback.  This made the key somewhere between G# and A.  The song reached number one on 5/22/65.  (Take 2 was bootlegged without the fade-out or echo.)
