EVERY LITTLE THING WE SAID TODAY

RECORDING CHRONOLOGY:

PART ONE: IN THE BEGINNING

John Lennon, drawn by Terry R. Shaw

Order of Data: Date, event or title, takes recorded, lead singer, writer (s), where recorded, unusual facts, instruments played (if other than Paul on bass, George on lead guitar, John on rhythm guitar and Ringo on drums), and release dates. BOLD TYPE = Released to the public in some form, i.e. single, album, CD or "bootleg" (album, CD or tape), regardless if it was a record, filmed concert, or a recorded and/or filmed interview or press conference.  S: = Who sang the lead  W: = Who wrote the song. (I’ve tried to determine who really wrote the song and how much he contributed.  Sometimes I might say “McCartney” alone when the record or CD gives “Lennon/McCartney” credit.  This is based on interviews with the Beatles, etc.)  S = Single  A = Album   Bootleg = Recordings that have not been officially released but can be obtained by the enterprising fan via the "underground", the Internet, etc.

UNRECORDED:  The Beatles were born as follows: Ringo on Sunday 7/7/40 at No. 9 Madryn Street, sub-district of Toxteth Park, Liverpool. John Winston on Wednesday 10/9/40 at the Liverpool Maternity Hospital, sub-district of Abercromby, Oxford Street in Liverpool. James Paul on Thursday 6/18/42 at Walton General Hospital, sub-district of Walton Park, 107 Rice Lane in Liverpool. George on Thursday 2/24/43 at 12 Arnold Grove, sub-district of Wavertree, Liverpool. (For many years George mistakenly reported his birthday as February 24.) Ringo’s real name is Richard Parkin, but he was known as Richard Starkey. His grandfather took a stepfather’s name, Starkey, as his own but didn’t change it legally. His father is Richard Starkey, a confectioner or cake maker, and his mother is Elsie Gleave Starkey. The Starkeys moved to No. 10 Admiral Grove not long after Ringo’s birth. During his childhood, Ringo spent a total of 3 years at the Mytle Children’s Hospital, Myrtle Street at Mulbert, Liverpool. John’s father is Alfred Lennon, a steward on a steamship, and his mother is Julia Stanley Lennon. John lived at No. 9 Newcastle Road in Penny Lane, Liverpool at first, then at 251 Menlove Avenue, Woolton, Liverpool with his Aunt Mimi and her husband George Smith. In 1960, he and Stu Sutcliffe moved into a flat at No. 3 Gambler Terrace, Liverpool for a short time. Paul’s father is James McCartney, a “centre” at the Turner Aircraft factory, and his mother is Mary Patricia Mohin McCartney. Paul first lived in Speke at 10 Sunbury Road*, Liverpool, then at 12 Ardwick Park, Liverpool and finally, in 1955, at 20 Forthlin Road, Allerton, Liverpool. George’s father is Harold Hargreaves Harrison, a corporation bus driver, and his mother is Louise French Harrison. In 1954 George moved to No. 25 Upton Green, Speke, Liverpool. From about 1959 to 1965, the Harrison home was 174 Mackets Lane, Liverpool. * NOTE: A friend of Paul’s told me that he thought it was near the Liverpool football club in Anfield. But, he remembers Paul living in a Council house at 75 Western Avenue in Speke before the Sunbury Road address. Then the family moved to Ardwick Road. That is also the area in which George grew up.)

UNK/56 UNRECORDED: George gets his first guitar. It’s an Egmond. Ringo gets his first drum. It’s just an old bass drum. Finally for Christmas he gets a whole set. Paul writes his first song, “I Lost My Little Girl”, on his Zenith acoustic guitar. His father had given him a trumpet which he traded in for the Zenith. Paul’s first electric guitar was a Rosetti Lucky Seven, which he played through a little green Elpico amp. He bought it just before the 1960 Hamburg visit. George breaks his first guitar and gets a Hofner President. His first electric guitar is a Hofner Club 40, then a Futurama. Paul’s first bass was Stu’s Hofner President, but he bought his own violin-shaped model in Hamburg. In 1963 Hofner gave Paul a new 500/1 Hofner bass. In August 1965, Rickenbacker presented Paul with a Rickenbacker 4001S at the Hollywood home they had rented for the Hollywood Bowl concert.

3/57 UNRECORDED:  The Blackjacks are formed with John Lennon on guitar, Pete Shotton on washboard, Colin Hanton on drums, Eric Griffiths on guitar, Rod Davis on banjo and Bill Smith on the tea-chest bass.  The name is used only for about a week.  Then it becomes the Quarry Men.

4/57 UNRECORDED:  The Quarry Men add personnel.  Len Garry or Ivan Vaughn play tea-chest bass (depending on who shows up) and Nigel Whalley manages and also plays the tea-chest bass, when needed. They perform auditions at Wison Hall and Winter Gardens Ballroom in Garsten, Liverpool, and take part in contests at Grafton Ballroom, Locarno Ballroom, Pavilion Theatre and Rialto Ballroom in Liverpool and Pavilion Theatre in Aintree, Liverpool.

Sat. 6/22/57 UNRECORDED: The Quarry Men appear at a celebration at Roseberry Street, Liverpool. They play on the back of a coal lorry and again are not paid for the job. They perform in the afternoon and the evening. There are photographs of the event which show the name "Quarry Men" on Colin Hanton's drums.
UNRECORDED: The Quarry Men perfom in the afternoon and evening at an outdoor party on Roseberry Street in Liverpool.

7/UNK/57 UNRECORDED: The Quarry Men perform at the Quarry Bank High School in Woolton without Paul

Sat. 7/6/57 UNRECORDED: Ivan Vaughan introduces Paul to John around 6:45pm at the “fete” or “Grand Dance” at St. Peter’s Church in Woolton, Liverpool. John and his skiffle group perform from 4:15pm to 5:15pm and again at 5:45pm on the back of a truck outside the church hall. From 8pm to 10pm they go inside for the main dance. They split the time with the George Edwards Band. Just for the record, according to John and Paul, the first song John learned was “Ain’t That A Shame” and John was performing “Come And Go With Me” when Paul first saw him today. The following are the earliest known recordings of a “Beatle”, although it was only of John with the Quarry Men before Paul and George came along. Bob Molyneux, on a Grundig home recorder, recorded these at the fete, it was claimed. The tape was discovered in 1994. Would it be too much of a coincidence that this recording was made on the same day that John and Paul met?
RECORDINGS: John on vocals, John and Eric Griffiths on guitar, Pete Shotton on the washboard, Len Garry on tea-chest bass and Rod Davis on banjo. Drummer Colin Hanton was sitting out. Recorded at a “fete” at St. Peter’s Church in Woolton. Bootleg. (Ringo will be 17 tomorrow.)

4/60 UNRECORDED: It has been suggested in books and documentaries that John and Stu came up with the name "Beetles" from the movie "The Wild One", starring Marlon Brando and Lee Marvin. That is possible, but the film was banned in Britain until 1967 and the Beatles probably never saw it. Bill Harry, from the "Mersey Beat" entertainment newspaper, was there in the Gambier Terrace flat rented by Rod Murray and Stuart Sutcliffe, (Gambier Terrace is a row of houses in Liverpool situated on a terrace overlooking St. James Mount and Gardens and Liverpool Cathedral), when John and Stuart were thinking up names. He informed me that since the boys had included a lot of Buddy Holly songs in their act, Stuart suggested that they find a name similar to Holly's band "the Crickets". Stu said, "How about 'beetles'?" They used variations over the next few months, incorporating "beat", a musical term, into the name, i.e. the Beatals, the Silver Beats, the Silver Beetles, the Silver Beatles and finally the Beatles in August 1960.

Thurs. 5/5/60  UNRECORDED:  The band’s name is changed to “The Silver Beetles”.  Tommy Moore becomes the drummer for one month.  (Norman Chapman was the drummer prior to leaving for military service.)  Allan Williams becomes the manager.  (Date is approximate.)

UNK  RECORDINGS?: According to sources, these songs were written by the Beatles and were a part of their stage act.  If they were ever recorded is unknown.  As a couple of their friends and acquaintances had “home” reel-to-reel mono tape recorders, and were known to record them as a “rehearsal aid”, it is likely that some of John and Paul’s original compositions got recorded.  It is also just as likely that they no longer exist, as tapes were too valuable to be saved and there was no reason to do so, at the time.  If they exist today, they would have surfaced by now.

Mon. 3/27-Sun. 7/2/61 UNRECORDED: The Beatles perform nightly (98 nights) at the Top Ten Club in Hamburg. Sometimes they back Tony Sheridan and Stu Sutcliffe sits in occasionally.

4/61 UNRECORDED:  Allan Williams quits as the Beatles’ manager.

5/61 RECORDINGS: One source gives the following two songs as the Beatles backing Tony Sheridan in Hamburg, Germany.  It’s unknown if the recordings exist and if the backing group was the Beatles.  The songs were unreleased.
KANSAS CITY  S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Leiber/Stoller
HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY!  S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Richard Penniman

Thurs. 6/22/61  RECORDING SESSION: The Beatles back Tony Sheridan on several recordings made at the Frederich-Eberts-Halle studio in Hamburg, Germany.  The producer was Bert Kaempfert.  There were at least two and maybe three recording sessions.  The actual dates are very unclear and disputed over by several sources, as are the songs that the Beatles actually played on.  The Beatles were in Hamburg from 3/27/61 to 7/2/61 at the Top Ten Club and from 4/13/62 to 5/31/62 at the Star Club.  I put the notation “Verified as Beatles on the recording.” when I was sure it was correct. (Paul was 19 years old four days ago.)
MY BONNIE aka MY BONNIE LIES OVER THE OCEAN S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  T. Woods/H.J. Fuller  Paul and John on harmony background.  Two versions were recorded with different intros, one in English and one in German.  One source says the German intro was recorded on 10/4/61 without the Beatles.  Verified as Beatles on the recording.   S-6/61, S-1/5/62 (UK), 1/27/64 (US), A-6/62, EP-9/62
THE SAINTS aka WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN   S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Traditional  Verified as Beatles on the recording.  S-2/28/64 (UK), 3/27/64 (US), A-6/62, EP-9/62
CRY FOR A SHADOW aka BEATLE BOP  S:  Instrumental  W:  George Harrison/John Lennon  Verified as Beatles on the recording.  S-2/28/64 (UK), 3/27/64 (US), A-7/12/63, EP-9/62

Fri. 6/23/61 RECORDING SESSION: (See “Recording Session” information on 6/22/61.)  (Stu Sutcliffe is 21 years old today.)
AIN’T SHE SWEET   S:  John  W:  Jack Yelen/Milton Ager   Verified as Beatles on the recording.   EP-10/62, S-5/29/64, A-6/29/64
NOBODY’S CHILD
S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Cohen/Foree  In the “Anthology” video, Ringo said that he used to sing this song to his mother when he was a little boy.  She would always cry.  Verified as Beatles on the recording.   S-1/31/64 (UK), A-6/19/64

Th.-Sa. 6/22-24/61  RECORDING SESSIONS:   (See 6/22/61 entry for information.)  UNK studio in Hamburg.
TELL ME IF YOU CAN    S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Tony Sheridan/Paul McCartney?  (Tony Sheridan claims that he and Paul wrote this song together during this period.  It’s unknown if they recorded it or even made a demo recording, if they actually wrote together.)  Unreleased.
SWEET GEORGIA BROWN  (2:03)  S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Bernie/Pinkard/Casey  NOT verified as the Beatles on the recording for several reasons:  There’s a good piano player.  It sounds like an upright bass in the recording.  There are no backing vocals (on the original recording) and it’s a multi-track recording, which wasn’t available when the Beatles were known to be recording with Sheridan. New vocals were added probably in early 1964.  One source gives the original recording date as 4/23 to 4/27/62.  EP-10/62, S-1/31/64 (UK)

Sat. 6/24/61?  RECORDING SESSION:  (See entry at 6/2/61 for information.)  One source doubts that the recording session went on for a third day and at a different location, given the cost of recording.  That’s probably correct.  CD notes say the recording was done at the Rahlstedt Studio in Hamburg.  I don’t know for sure.
TAKE OUT SOME INSURANCE aka TAKE OUT SOME INSURANCE ON ME, BABY aka IF YOU LOVE ME BABY  S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Charles Shingleton or Singleton/Waldenese Hall   Verified as Beatles on the recording.   A-6/1/64, S-5/29/64
RECORDING SESSIONS: There is much confusion about the remaining “Beat Brothers” recordings stemming mostly from the name.  It was decided by Sheridan’s producer, Bert Kaempfert, that all of Sheridan’s recordings would list that name as the backing group.  A true fan, I think, can listen to these songs and not hear that “Beatle sound”.  That’s not to say that it’s not the Beatles, but at best I would say only some of the Beatles might be sitting in.  All the songs were again recorded in Hamburg at an unknown studio.
WHAT’D I SAY  S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Ray Charles   A-Late 64, S-UNK/87
LET’S DANCE  S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Tony Sheridan/Lee  A-Late 64, S-UNK/87
RUBY BABY  S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Leiber/Stoller  A-Late 64, S-UNK/87
YA YA   S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Robinson  A-Late 64, S-UNK/87
SKINNY MINNY  S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Haley/Keefer/Gabler/Cafra  A-6/62 (Author Wiener claims this was recorded in 4/62 with the Beatles.  I don’t think so.)
WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN’ GOING ON   S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Williams/Sonny or Williams/David  A-62
I KNOW BABY  S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Tony Sheridan  A-62
YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE  S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Davis/Mitchell  A-62
READY TEDDY   S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Blackwell/Marascalco  A-62
HALLELUJAH, I LOVE HER SO   S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Ray Charles  A-62
LET’S TWIST AGAIN S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Mann/Appell/Buchencamp  A-62
TOP TEN TWIST S:  Tony Sheridan   W:  Hanson/Bones/Sheridan/Luth  A-62
SWANEE RIVER S:  Tony Sheridan  W:  Stephen Foster  (Author Wiener claims this was recorded on 4/62 with the Beatles.  I don’t think so.  A book about the Beatles “from Cavern to Hamburg” claims to have proof that the Beatles are on the recording.)  A-62
