BURY v LEICESTER (M&N), September 28th 2003
Bury welcomed Leicester to Goshen, looking to
return to winning ways after a heavy defeat at
Stoke. A good start as both teams fielded new
riders in the Division 2 event, Tom Sensical and
Carl Jarvis gave Leicester an early lead with a
6-4 and 7-3, the home side replied with
O-Callaghan and Doyle , Jarman and Mann taking
race wins. A fine race by Will Collins to join
Jarman at the front in the 7th put Bury into a
lead they never lost.
Leicester responded with victories to Lucy
Whitehead / Ashley Doughty, and Jarvis /Watts as
Bury held on to win 62-58.. Good racing from all
competitors with the youngsters on both sides
showing improvement.
The Senior match and both sides slightly down on
strength, a real classic of a match that edged
to either side before being levelled again. The
early initiative to Leicester, Mark and Nick
Whitehead taking a 6-4 followed by Watts /Waring
7-2 over Scrannage. Exclusions to Whitehead and
Marchant gave Bury a 5-4 and a 6-3 to lead by 1,
Waring Harrison , a good pass regained the lead,
with Rothwell inflicting Mark Whiteheads first
defeat it was 44-43 to the visitors. Howarth /
Whiting 6-3 over Venson, equalised by a
Whiteheads 6-4 5- all. Marchant and Watts scored
a 6-4, race 15 the race of the day as Venson and
Dyson clashed for all 4 laps for 3rd place,
level again. Rothwell did all the work in the
16th, only to end up at the back, Dyson exc in
the 17th to give Leicester a 1 pt lead and
inside grids in the 18th. Marchant lead from the
gate, but a super pass by Steve Muff brought
Howarth through as Bury pulled off a 7-2 and a
superb 89-85 victory. Lots of controversy, hard
racing and a credit to the sport, the Reffing
decisions evened out just. Waring, Mark
Whitehead were consistent for Leicester with
support from Venson and Harrison. Craig Marchant
having one of those days. For Bury Steve Muff
had a fine match, with Rothwell, Howarth and
Scrannage leading the fight to round off the
Home season with a victory.

LEICESTER v POOLE (Premier Lge.), 18th May
Monarchs
hold off Poole
Mark Newey
(right) top scored for the Leicester Monarchs as
they beat Poole 92 - 84.
Leicester
Monarchs held firm against Poole in their match
at Slater Street on Sunday to win comfortably by
92 points to 84
The Monarchs
restricted the south-coast club to just three
wins throughout the 18 races, which began when
Jim Waring and Mark Newey scored maximum points
in the opening heat.
Kevin Burns and
Mark Whitehead followed suit in the next race to
give Leicester a whirlwind start.
With David
Hemsley, current World Champion and former
Leicester rider, in the Poole team the visitors
were feeling optimistic of making a recovery
until the Monarchs' captain, Norman Venson won
the tussle for first bend supremacy to secure
the lead down the back straight and won the
race.
Hemsley bounced
back after that setback to remain unbeaten in
his remaining rides but his team mates were
unable to raise their performance enough to
catch an in-form Leicester side.
Leicester
scorers:
Mark Newey 17+2, James Harrison 1, Kevin Burns
17,
Mark Whitehead 9+2, Norman Venson 15+1, Craig
Marchant 11+1,
Nicky Whitehead 8 and Jim Waring 14+2.
Leicester's
combination team dominated the match against
Poole and on their way to a winning margin of 71
points to 54.
The Monarchs'
won eight of the 13 heats. The visitors relied
far too heavily on the efforts of two riders,
whereas Leicester's strength in depth was the
decisive factor.
Five of
Leicester's team reached double figures and
their two reserves, Jenna Whitehead and Ashley
Doughty rode well when called upon to ride
during the match.
Leicester
scorers:
Rob Jones 11+1, Lucy Whitehead 10, Gavin Watts
13+1,
Carl Jarvis 5+2, Tom Sensicall 12+2, James
Harrison 12, Ashley Doughty 6 and Jenna
Whitehead 7.
Next weekend
the Monarchs' will be riding in Holland where
the European Club Championship is being staged.
Twice finalists in this competition, the team
will be all out to make it a trio of appearances
against international opposition.

LEICESTER v POOLE (Premier Lge.), May 18th 2003
Leicester 92
Poole Seaview Coaches 84
Leicester won this Premier League encounter, but
it was a hollow victory in a match that was
marred by a series of controversial refereeing
decisions. Leicester, who had declined the offer
of a neutral referee, opened with a 7-3 when
Newey dived inside Roberts (who had led from the
tapes) on the last bend earning a 7-3 to the
home side as Roberts fell allowing Jim Waring to
sail past for the win followed by Newey.
Heat 2 saw a dubious tape exclusion for Pete
Young on grid two as it appeared to most
observers that Kevin Burns on the inside grid
had moved first. This left Jason Ashford alone
on grid 4, gifting a 7-2 Heat win to Leicester
stretching their lead to 14-5.
Heat 3 saw more controversy as Craig Marchant
drove under Dave Hemsley forcing him over the
outside edge and into the fence. Amazingly there
was no re-start and with Hemsley unable to
finish, it was a 6-3 for the home side
stretching their lead to an unbelievable 20-8
after 3 races!
Heat 4 saw Mark Newey win from the gate pursued
all the way by Adam Peck (riding for Poole on a
secondary licence) with Roberts executing a
great pass on Nicky Whitehead for a 5-5.
Heat 5 saw another win for on form Jim Waring
ahead of Clanfield with veteran Kev Lowey
keeping James Harrison at bay for another 5-5
making it 30-18 to the home side.
Heat 6 was a win from the gate from Young, but
with Marchant gating round Ashford it meant
another 5-5.
The next race saw Hemsley blast away for the
win, but with Newey getting the better of Lowey
and sitting for the man the race was shared.
Heat 8 saw Clanfield race clear but he left a
gap which Kev Burns seized upon driving under
him and he came out best in the resultant
collision to earn a heat win, with the 5-5
maintaining Leicesters comfortable 12 pt lead at
45-33.
The last race before the interval saw Norman
Venson gate round Jason Ashford for the win with
Ashford clearly struggling out the gate
following his recent broken ankle, Peck made
sure the heat was shared when he motored away
from Nicky Whitehead making it 50-38 at
half-time.
The second half began with yet more controversy
as Craig Marchant clearly moved whilst under
orders, but strangely a re-run was called with
no exclusion. Young gated round Marchant in the
re-run but Craig managed to block Peck on the
first turn to help Waring secure the third for
the seventh successive 5-5.
Heat 11 saw Poole finally claim their first heat
win of the day as Hemsley & Aaron Lowey sped
away from Burns/M.Whitehead for a 7-3 reducing
the deficit to 58-50.
Heat 12 saw yet another poor refereeing decision
as Waring forced Young over the outside edge and
although the Scot still managed to get past, it
should have resulted in an exclusion for the
home rider, instead it merely allowed Newey to
race home unopposed for an easy win.
Heat 13 saw a fine 6-4 from Roberts/Clanfield
over Venson/Marchant which reduced the gap to
67-61 in favour of the home side.
Heat 14 saw a determined win from Hemsley but
the Leicester pairing of the two Whitehead
brothers shut out Peck for a 5-5.
Heat 15 was a vital 7-3 for Leicester amidst yet
more controversy as Burns passed Lowey on the
inside with his wheels clearly over the inside
line forcing Lowey wide allowing Waring through
for the maximum heat advantage. This made the
scoreline 79-69 for the home side with only 3
heats remaining.
However, Heat 16 proved to be dramatic as
finally a decision went against the home team
with an exclusion for Nicky Whitehead who moved
at the tapes. The race was re-run a further
twice and should have resulted in another
exclusion for the home side as Venson crossed
the inside edge before slamming Young through
the fence. Venson (on gate 1) again cut across
the inside edge again in the re-start without
punishment, but Young/Roberts drove round the
outside for a well deserved 7-2 making it 81-76
with two races remaining.
Heat 17 saw Newey race clear for the heat win as
desperation crept in to the Poole side and
Ashford was deservedly excluded for excessive
slow riding.
The final heat was academic but produced a
superb pass by World Champion Hemsley over
Marchant who then chose to block Clanfield and
allow Burns through for the 5-5 making the final
score 92-84. Newey, Burns, Venson & Waring all
scored well for the home team, with Hemsley,
Young and Roberts producing good performances
for the visitors.
Sadly, what should have been a great match was
overshadowed by inept refereeing and it would
seem that this years Premier League (as last
years was), will be decided as much by
refereeing decisions as it will by ability on
the track. The Premier League has been touted as
the "Blue Riband" event of the sport, and as
such neutral referees should be appointed where
possible or riders will simply refuse to travel
long distances to compete in such circumstances.

Leicester Monarchs v Scotia Allsorts.
Midland & North, League A and B.
Saturday 10th May, 4.00 p.m. Slater Street,
Leicester.
Late call offs,
for an already depleted 2003 squad, left Scotia
with a mammoth task, for their third trip to the
Midlands. Five of the six, B team members had to
step into the A side to face the Premier League
team. The Monarchs B team were missing some
regulars also.
Amazingly, 11 of the 12 heats in the B match
were drawn, with only a 7th heat, 6 - 4 to the
visitors, separating the sides. Rob Jones paired
with young Robbie Venson, took heat 1. The first
of his four wins, with the chasing Ewan Tulloch
falling. The Lucy Whitehead, Carl Jarvis
pairing, secured all the second and, third
places, in their four outings. Heat 7 saw Scotia
take and hold a two point match advantage, with
Ewan Tulloch heading Tom Sensicall. Tom, just
thwarting Allsorts Mikey Hewitson's challenge
into the third bend. The Scotia youngster,
nursing his bike home with rattling spokes, just
keeping ahead of Tom Dilkes. The series of drawn
races continued to the end of the match, with
the last heat lining up, Leicester's, Whitehead,
Jarvis pairing against Scotia's, Mackie and
McKinlay. The Allsorts combined ages, 100 years
over the two Monarchs. Chic Mackie keeping the
two pressing youngsters at bay.
Monarchs B:-
Rob Jones 16(4), Tom Sensicall 15(4), Carl
Jarvis 10+2(4),
Lucy Whitehead 10+2(4), Tom Dilkes 4(4), Robbie
Venson 4(4).

3,1,2,2', 8+1. Ian McKinlay 2',2',1,1, 6+2.
Result:-
Leicester B 59 v Scotia B 61
Not to dwell on
the Allsorts performance in this match would
perhaps do a disservice to Leicester. In
contrast to the 11 out of 12 drawn races from
the B match, 14 of the 18 heats were 7 - 3 wins
to the home side. Nearly every one of these
races was over by the third bend. Craig Newsome
ran second to Mark Newey in the first, and Chic
Mackie halted Mark Whitehead's challenge in heat
2, to follow partner Alan Smith home behind
Kevin Burns. Smith won heat 6 from Craig
Marchant and Norman Venson, with Marchant
heading Big Al in heat 9. That was about the
extent of the visitors challenge, as Leicester
romped home in every race after the interval.
Monarchs A:-
Mark Newey 19+1(5), Kevin Burns 18+2(5), Craig
Marchant 18+1(5), Jim Waring 16+2(5),
Norman Venson 15+4(5), Mark Whitehead 15+2(4),
Nicky Whitehead 13+1(4), Rob Jones 6+2(2).
Allsorts A:- Alan Smith 3,4,3,2,2, 14.
Craig Newsome 3,2,2,2,2, 11. Chic Mackie
2',1,2,1,1, 7+1.
Jackie Pinkerton 2,2,2,1,Res, 7. Ewan Tulloch

Leicester 120
(M Newey 19+1, K Burns 18+2)
Scotia 60

Quite close in the first half but after the
interval Leicester scored all maximums from the
outside grids.

Leicester 59
(R Jones 16, T Sensicall 15, L Whitehead and C
Jarvis 10+2)
Scotia 61
(C Mackie 13, G Anderson 13, E Tulloch 12+1)
A last heat decider that saw Chic Mackie and Ian
McKinley (total age *#=*&%$£ - oops broke my
calculator!) against Lucy (13) and Carl (11),
Chic gated and the youngsters couldn't catch him
but they did relegate "caveman" to the back for
the second time in the match.
As
ever a very sporting Scotia team who's attitude
to racing never changes win or lose.

LEICESTER v BURY (M&N), March 30th 2003
Bury travelled to Leicester hoping to continue
their winning ways, not to be though, as an
excellent home side won both meetings
comfortably. The 2nd division match went 91-53
to the home side Bury having to give penalty
points away . Rob Pearce had a fine 16 points.
In
the Senior, Craig Marchant unbeaten lead a solid
8 to a deserved 110-68 victory, only Neil
Howarth 15 and Mark Rushby getting to grips with
a fast gating team.
