 1965 Massimo Pupillo 4.8 This movie has a great atmosphere, graphic special effects makeup (for the time) and a wonderful soundtrack. If anything is lacking, the ending seems a bit rushed. I recommend the VHS version that Something Weird released a few years back. It is struck from an immaculate print and contains the European version of the movie-this includes a brief topless shot (unfortunately not of Barbara Steele but she does emerge from her bath in a subsequent tantalizing scene.) The Alpha Video DVD release is taken from a rather scratchy print and is minus the nudity but is available for less than $6.00. This Italian shocker would be a welcome addition to any Euro film collection. IMDB

The Last Night 1983 Michael J. Murphy Two psychopathic killers break into a theatre where they're getting ready on stage for the final show of a murder play. Soon the actors begin to disappear one by one. Will they be able to finish the play or will they all die before the curtains close? This rare British wannabe slasher flick really failed to impress me. The movie takes place in a theatre, not a cinema, but a proper theatre where two serial killers are offing the actors. The story is anything but original and even if it obviously wants to be a slasher flick, it ends up feeling more like an action-thriller. The movie is only 50 minutes long and I'm guessing that even the director realized that this movie was going to be a disaster so he probably never bothered to make it full-length. The acting is pretty terrible but luckily, the charming British accent that they have makes us forget about the dreadful acting. The director also seems to be a rookie since some of the scenes are way too dark and some of the scenes are way too bright. It really doesn't feel professional in any way. No wonder this is a forgotten flick. The Last Night is a complete and utter mess and will hardly please any slasher fan. The story is awful, the acting is horrid and the director doesn't seem to have a clue of what he's doing. The only thing that this movie has going for it is that it's only 50 minutes long. If this would have been over an hour long I would have stopped watching it after the dreadful first 10 minutes. The police raided the distributors on the day after the video had been submitted to the BBFC. The BBFC had requested about 2m of cuts but somehow the police seemed to think that the uncut version was illegal and would not give the distributors the oppurtunity to implement the cuts that would make it legal. Then the DPP chipped in to the injustice by delaying the return of the film for 3 months, even though they later had to admit that there was no hint of child sex or extreme violence. Of course during this delay the distributors were almost driven to the point of bankruptcy. IMDB

This is a very rare film that you're not likely to ever get your hands onto. It was released about 20 years ago on VHS in England. Those were the days before the BBFC so it was not censored in any way. IMDB
Zapper's Blade of Vengeance 1974 Lindsay Shonteff 2.7 A definite improvement on the first movie, this jettisons most of the zany action and lame attempts at humour in favour of a more straightforward approach. They have also dropped the crude emphasis on titillation , although there is a smattering of dolly birds knocking about. A major plus is the introduction of a decent adversary in the form of Alan Lake, a quite charismatic actor who bears a striking resemblance to the young John Belushi. Because his character works so well and is interesting he can be afforded more screen time than was the case in the first movie. This takes the emphasis off the weak Marlowe, whose one-note performance as Zapper lets the film down. In the first movie she seemed understated compared to Gary Hope but next to Alan Lake in this film she simply appears less talented. Again, though, the supporting cast is very poor. The film opens well with an intriguing scene detailing a modern day duel;, however, the scene also introduces a note of mercy in Lake's character that is not present for the rest of the film. The scene makes good use of the British countryside like other films of this period (say EXPOSE or WITCHFINDER GENERAL) suggesting murky goings on in a tranquil, pastoral setting. While there is evidence, then, of a reasonable intelligence at work here, Shonteff lets himself down with a poor command of technical know-how. The camera work is poor, the editing is dreadful and the special effects are ropey to say the least. IMDB
