The Takers |
1971 |
Carl Monson; Dwayne Avery |
4.1 |
Explosive Double Feature Cheerfully insane ex-Marine Jack Brannon hates teenage "freaks and nuts" so much that he steals 40 land mines and turns the desert site of a soon-to-be-held rock festival into one big Booby Trap. Headquartered in a stolen motor home, the cackling loon (played waaaay over the top by Carl Monson, director of Please Don't Eat My Mother) also blows up a hitchhiking hippie chick just for the fun of it. But what jovial Jack doesn't realize is that his anti-social activities have triggered a chain reaction that stretches all the way from the military to a Sunset Strip topless bar, so that the site of his intended massacre is suddenly besieged by his cocktail waitress ex-wife, her shot-in-the-shoulder boyfriend, two out-for-blood mobsters, and a big sissy with stolen money. Ka-Boooom! Plus: After a breakfast of LSD and hitchhikers, The Takers-two berserk bikers-decide to go upscale when they spot suburban housewife Laura and bachelorette Barbie, follow them to Laura's home, and invite themselves in: "We're gonna have us a party with some educated social-type broads!" And party they do until Laura's hubbie (director Carl Monson again!) unexpectedly shows up to settle things with some shotgun vengeance and...well, one of the goofiest, most startling endings of any motion picture. Yipes! Two demented drive-in delights from the vaults of Harry Novak, both Booby Trap and The Takers are best summed up by the lovely Miss Barbie: "Listen, honey, these two are freak-outs!" |

Andreas Bethmann |
|
The translation of this early Bethmann work is Dance of the Pumpkinhead. Although the copy I saw was all in German I was able to get this story from it. A killer who wears a jack-o-lantern kills people, who come back to life as psychos to continue the murders. If that sounds stupid, you would be right. Although I consider myself a gorehound I found this movie to be a chore to endure. Nothing happens for the first forty minutes and when it does, it's pretty darn hokey. Bethmann must have bought a fog machine prior to making this film and it's pretty obviously. It's as if he wanted us to see "how cool" it was since most night scenes have wisps of fog shooting through them constantly. This is one you can easily pass on but for fans of bad German gore flicks I suppose you'll want to add this to you want list. |

Terror Express is another entry into the Last House on the Left sub-genre that emerged in the 70s. To its credit its one of the more enjoyable films full of sleazy characters and a top-notch cast. Look out for Zora Kerova's double entry scene, the weirdo father who secretly wants to make love to his daughter, and Carlo De Mejo in an almost hardcore sequence involving the said daughter. Jesus how could anyone ever describe this film as dull? Not for the easily offended for sure but definitely one for the collection of any Italian horror-sleaze merchant. |

Space Invasion Of Lapland! A glowing white spaceship lands under the snow above the Arctic Circle in the Lapland region of Northern Sweden. Believing it to be an unusual meteor, a team of geologists race to the site just in time to be menaced by a giant, furry, monster-faced something-or-other that looks like a drunken Chewbacca. The creature waddles around, wrecks a Lapp village, and makes like a puppy dog in heat for American figure skating champion Barbara Wilson. Carrying the gal in its hairy arms, the beat takes Wilson to the spacecraft where she has a close encounter with the spacecraft's alien inhabitants… A Swedish-American co-production from the director of The Mole People and Sweden's first (and so far only) science fiction-giant monster movie, Terror in the Midnight Sun was shot in English, features a surprise peek-a-boo nude scene and is presented in its original uncut version for the very first time in the U.S.! Plus: Invasion Of The Animal People, the much different, much altered U.S. version of the same film from schlockmeister supreme Jerry Warren (Teenage Zombies), who cut and re-edited the original, changed the plot, and added new shot-in-L.A. footage featuring John Carradine as host and narrator, in addition to lots of utterly pointless scenes including an unbilled bit by Warren regular Katherine Victor (The Wild World Of Batwoman) that will positively make your head spin! |

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Next Generation |
1995 |
Kim Henkel |
|
In this third sequel to slasher classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, four Texas teens are abducted by a family of psychos on their way home from the senior prom. Bloodshed, torture, and intrigue ensue. Barry (Tyler Cone) and Sean (John Harrison) meet their fates quickly, but semi-bimbo Heather (Lisa Newmyer) lasts long enough to be tortured and burned before having her head cracked open like a walnut by a mechanical leg. Meanwhile, sweet, befuddled Jenny (Renee Zellweger) actively resists her captors by stealing cars, breaking through windows, and jumping off roofs. Although Leatherface (Robert Jacks), the human skin-wearing transvestite based on real-life serial killer Ed Gein, is back on board, the cannibal cast this time out also includes several new characters, from bionic villain Vilmer (Matthew McConaughey) to trashy realtor Darla (Tonie Perensky) and literature-quoting flunky W.E. (Joe Stevens). The plot also adds an X-Files-esque conspiracy to the basic Chainsaw concept in the form of deformed businessman Rothman (James Gale), who descends on the family of killers to critique their torture techniques. Written and directed by original Massacre scribe Kim Henkel, the film appeared at 1995 festivals in a 104-minute cut under the title The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre; after actors Zellweger and McConaughey became Hollywood stars, the film was re-titled, re-cut, and given a limited theatrical release in August of 1997. The nine minutes of deleted footage included scenes of Jenny's troubled home life. Both versions included brief cameos from Marilyn Burns, Paul Partain, and John Dugan — all of whom appeared in Tobe Hooper's original film. Prodigious litigation preceded the film's re-release, although both the McConaughey and Zellweger camps denied attempting to block its release. The film's soundtrack includes a who's who of local Texas bands. — Brian J. Dillard |

In the depths of the lush, steamy Amazon jungle, rife with exotic life forms, a group of adventurers embarks on a quest to discover a legendary river reportedly filled with diamonds "the size of your eyes" as well as precious jewels and gold, and in the process finds itself enveloped in incomprehensible barbarism. At the mercy of this mysterious jungle labyrinth, the treasure hunters are forced into fierce battles with determined cannibals, ruthless headhunters, ferocious alligators, piranhas, a tribe of topless female warriors, and equally disturbing - the greed of their own colleagues, raising the question "Which is more treacherous - the greed of man or the perils of the jungle?"
