The Sadistic Baron Von Klaus |
1962 |
Jesús Franco |
|
This plodding, sadistic horror film from director Jesus Franco concerns an Austrian legend about a ghostly Baron who supposedly rises from the swamps and murders women. When real murders are discovered, Inspector Borowsky (Georges Rollin) is immediately suspicious of the Baron's descendant, Max von Klaus (Howard Vernon), who lives in a creepy castle with his nephew Ludwig (Hugo Blanco) and sister Elisa (Maria Frances). Ludwig whips a pretty woman named Margaret (Gogo Rojo) and burns her with a heated poker in the film's only remotely shocking sequence, which has been excised in several of the release prints. A slow-moving story based on Franco's novel La Main d'Une Homme Mort leaves Godofredo Pacheco's cinematography and a deft performance by Howard Vernon as the film's only attractions. — Robert Firsching |

Jess Franco is no stranger to sleaze, and SADOMANIA may be his most glorious achievement in that category (directed under the alias "Robert Griffin"). Alluring young bride Tara (PLAYBOY model Ursula Fellner) arrives at a terrifying prison camp, led by the beautiful, but quite sadistic, warden Magda Urtado (transsexual adult star Ajita Wilson). In a whirling mix of lesbianism, bestiality, white slavery (including a cameo by Franco), and violence, Franco creates one of his most controversial sexploitation flicks. Completely banned in the United Kingdom, and released only in tamer versions in the United States, this cult film cuts to the heart of the exploitation genre. |

In this TV adaptation of the Stephen King novel, a journalist with traumatic memories of his haunted childhood returns to find his hometown being infiltrated by vampires. As a boy in Jerusalem's Lot, ME, Ben Mears (Rob Lowe) took a dare and broke into a local mansion called the Marsten House. There, he had the misfortune of discovering the corpses resulting from a scandalous murder/suicide. Decades later, he returns to find that a mysterious antiques dealer (Donald Sutherland) and his unseen business partner (Rutger Hauer) have moved into the Marsten House. Soon, townspeople begin disappearing and dying, only to return, floating outside the windows of their loved ones and begging to be let in. Only Ben and a few newfound allies suspect the awful truth: that something unholy has overtaken their town...something with links to the sinister mansion of Ben's nightmares. Originally broadcast June 20 and 21, 2004, on the TNT cable network, Salem's Lot was scripted by Peter Filardi, who previously penned The Craft and Flatliners. Shot on-location in Australia, this is the second television adaptation of Salem's Lot, and it follows Tobe Hooper's 1979 version. Hauer and Sutherland are old vampire buddies, having previously co-starred in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer film. — Brian J. Dillard |

This entertaining entry in the long-running Mexican fantasy series stars Gina Romand as Frankenstein's daughter, who remains eternally youthful thanks to the blood of young virgins. The heroic, masked wrestler must team up with the hulking, disgruntled Ursus to foil her evil plans. Roberto Canedo co-stars with Carlos Suarez, Carlos Agosti, and Gerardo Zepeda. Director Miguel M. Jeff Lieberman, celebrated by horror film buffs for his imaginative cult favorites Squirm and Blue Sunshine, returns to filmmaking with this offbeat shocker. It's late October, and Douglas (Alexander Brickel), like most nine-year-olds, is looking forward to Halloween, especially trick or treating. Doug's mother (Amanda Plummer) has made him a costume based on a character from his favorite video game, Satan's Little Helper, and his big sister Jenna (Katheryn Winnick) will be home from college to collect candy with him. But Douglas is angry when Jenna's new boyfriend, Alex (Stephen Graham), tags along, and he soon ditches his sister to go trick or treating alone. While making the rounds, Douglas happens upon a serial killer (Joshua Annex) dressed up like a monster from his video game; Douglas admires the killer's grisly handiwork, and offers to act as his assistant, just like in the game. First Douglas leads the maniac to Alex, whom he soon kills, and then he brings him home, where Jenna and Mom think the masked killer is just Alex in his Halloween costume. Shot on digital video, Satan's Little Helper was screened at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival. — Mark Deming |

Overview Of part 1 & 2
In the tradition of such fringe atrocities as Bride of Frank, Schramm, and pretty much everything by Troma, this pair of nutso, shot-on-video efforts chronicles a serial killer's plunge into the depths of dementia. Granted, that's one of the more common themes for low budget filmmakers, but you have to give these guys credit for not pulling any punches and turning out a body of work that, um, speaks for itself.
After receiving a creepy Howdy Doody ventiloquist doll named Rubberneck from his girlfriend Drew, fledgling serial killer Harry Russo (John Giancaspro) is driven over the edge by ranting voices in his head and goes on a frenetic rampage, beginning with Drew but soon expanding out to anyone within driving distance. While not raping, murdering, dancing to disco music in drag, and leaping around naked in parking lots while screaming at the camera, he takes time out to pee on a neighbor's bushes, shoots up in porno theaters, and drives around endlessly in his car on a one way trip to oblivion.
And that's about it, plot-wise. Best viewed straight through as one film, Schizophreniac (which has the demure onscreen subtitle, The Whore Mangler) and Necromaniac (Schizophreniac 2) douse the viewer in a cascading river of video nastiness, with plenty of fast cutting and flashy visual effects to keep the pace moving along briskly. Giancaspro is one seriously fearless actor to say the least, going from shrieking gibberish and gouging gory holes in his victims to borderline hardcore sex in a variety of seedy situations. The packaging dubs these "the vilest piece of filth ever to be filmed," and while that might be debatable (heck, did they ever see Forrest Gump?), it's definitely up there in the shock-for-shock's-sake home video pantheon. Fortunately there's also a lot of sick humor to lighten the experience; one early scene in the first film finds him angrily trying to order a Big Mac at a Wendy's, with profane results.
Both discs come in two-disc special editions (believe it or not), with similar bonus features: deleted scenes (most of them fairly tame and easily expendable), trailers, and video interviews with director Atkins, who also pops up in the second film as Jesus. (Really!) The film film also contains "A Walk with Harry," in which the lead actors goes on a tour of his neighborhood and reveals a little of his, uh, personality. (Watch it back to back with the "day in the life of Roger Watkins" featurette on The Last House on Dead End Street for maximum effect.) The second film also contains a music video, much in the style of those Necrophagia clips. You have been warned, and keep a warm bath handy after viewing.

This stylish Spanish horror film stars Paul Naschy, the legend of international horror who has played countless monsters and villains, garnering a reputation as the Spanish Lon Chaney. In the tradition of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, the story unfolds as a group of former students from the Monte Alto International High School return to pass a night in it's now-shuttered confines; the proceedings are recorded by the tech-savvy Jordi (Zoe Berriatua), who wears a mini-cam in his hat. The school has been closed down since a brutal bloodbath perpetrated by an insane security guard years earlier. The group is a motley bunch, led by the confident and logical Ramon, whose motivations as the night progresses are cast in an ever more doubful light. As the kids are picked off one by one, they encounter visions of the previous massacre, and the question presents itself: is the murderer human or not? Naschy's evil night watchman is played with characteristic aplomb, making this late-career performance a resounding testament to a lifetime spent perfecting villainy. The gut-wrenching suspense and well-executed gore make this chiller a truly terrifying experience. |

A broken family comes together for a Christmas dinner that degenerates into an orgy of incest, suicide, and murder. Carol (Candy Hammond) invites her estranged brothers and sisters to the house she shares with her mother (Maggie Rogers), a bitter, reclusive wheelchair-bound alcoholic who flies into a rage when she hears the news. The mother hates each of her children and is convinced that they're all after her considerable fortune. The siblings and their spouses arrive and the dinner begins peacefully as they all catch up on each other's lives. However, their mother refuses to mask her contempt, and her drunken recriminations raise tempers to a fever pitch and set the tone for an ugly evening. Later that night, a furtive incestuous dalliance is followed by a bathtub electrocution and a desperate act of hari-kari. A young military academy student is revealed to be a homosexual, an arsonist, and a blackmailer, and subsequently slashes his wrists in the backyard. The beautiful eldest sister is disfigured with acid, while her husband receives an axe in his forehead. Meanwhile, Carol is trying to resurrect her own incestuous relationship with her brother Michael (Robert Service), which ended when he moved away from home. His reluctance pushes her over the edge, and she takes violent retribution against their hateful matriarch. — Fred Beldin |

Sick o pathics is a homemade (shot on video) trashy Horror"/Exploitation Comedy that features Cameos of several Exploitation-vips. The Focus of interest here is of course the presence of the master himself: Renato Polselli enriches this product indeed enormously . The makers of it Massimo Lavagnini and Brigida Costa (servants" for magazines as Draculina" and Trauma") did it quite shameless: the third and last Episode of this „anthology" is an assault on the Intellect of every human being. A (fart)parody of joe d´amatos Antropophagus" but the first two Episodes starting with Hello Dolly" and The poor, the flesh and the bag" are quite entertaining. It all starts great: Massimo Lavagnini with priceless rasta wig walking on the street , before him shit with a table typical italian movie" on it (!) he jumps through it and goes further- attacking every Person who comes along his way. |

If it had been subtitled instead of dubbed it probably would have played in arthouses instead of grindhouses. So Naked, So Dead |

The rap on this giallo is that it is especially moralistic and misogynistic; however,I found the first charge to be untrue and the other greatly exaggerated. A crazed killer is murdering unfaithful wives and leaving photographic evidence of their dalliances next to the bodies. This certainly SEEMS pretty moralistic. But the betrayed husbands don't come off any more sympathetically than the wives. Many knew about their wives' infidelities and/or were playing around themselves (one husband of a murder victim is himself having an affair with another murder victim). Moreover, the killer doesn't turn out to be motivated by vengeance. He is killing these women because he can get away with it, because their high society husbands will thwart the investigation of the beleaguered inspector(Farley Granger) at every turn lest they themselves be publicly exposed as cuckolds! This kind of deep cynicism is typical of later period gialli and Italian poliziani films, but there's nothing especially moralistic about it. Viewed in this way, even the final actions of the detective, which are certainly appalling and take away the only remaining likable and sympathetic character in the movie, are clearly more a final act of despairing cynicism than of righteous anger.
As for the misogyny charge, the raison d'etre of this movie seems to be to show a lot of attractive European actresses (Silva Koscina, Femi Benussi, Annabella Incontrerra, Nieves Navarro, Krista Nell) in various states of undress, and the filmmakers don't seem to care too much whether these women are alive, dead, or dying at the time. The movie lacks the flair, the garish delerium, and the stylized violence of better gialli, but it's not really all that different in it's attitude toward women--they're a decorative canvas for a painting of depravity and brutality. But just because the painting isn't very good doesn't make this film any more or less morally reprehensible than other gialli. In fact, the only really sympathetic character in the whole movie is the college-age daughter (Angela Covello) of one of the murder victims, who hilariously admonishes her boyfriend's "bourgeois politics" while he fumbles with the buttons on her blouse. The incompetent filmmakers, however, inexplicably drop this potential heroine halfway through. An appealing female protagonist would have done a lot to mitigate the lingering misogyny, but here this movie once again suffers from its own incompetence.

Unlike many low-budget horror films, SOFT FOR DIGGING relies on a low-key premise and unique film style instead of gore and clichés. Told in a series of increasingly strange and suspenseful chapters, with an absolute bare minimum of dialogue, the film tells the story of Virgil, a hermit who lives in the woods on the edge of civilization. While traveling through the forest one morning, he witnesses a murder, but then later discovers no evidence and an unbelieving police force. Frustrated, Virgil begins to have haunting dreams about the murder that seem to be leading him towards a horrific conclusion. |

Blackie (Jack Oblivian) is an immortal from the Killer Frequency. He was sent to Earth in 1954 to prove his worth as an assassin by killing exactly 12 random victims within a certain span of time, something he failed to do. Forty years later he has returned to take the remaining three lives — no more, no less — that he requires to fulfill his prophecy. A lot has changed since he's been gone, though, and there are forces conspiring to keep him Earthbound. He takes on a vicious, trigger-happy femme fatale (Kerine Elkins) who exceeds the quota when she murders both of her parents, so they must drive around with her mother's corpse in the backseat until a new victim can be chosen by the Elder of the Lo-Fi Frequency (veteran roadshow man David F. Friedman). Meanwhile, Blackie's insane best friend (Mike Maker) falls in love with Goliatha (D'Lana Tunnell), a motorcycle-riding sideshow girl with a very short attention span ("What did you say, anyway?") who might have something to do with the Apocalypse. Goliatha has been chosen as the final victim, but she's arrested by the Men in Black (played by all three members of Japanese trash-rockers Guitar Wolf) for the crimes that Blackie has committed, and if she dies in the electric chair before he can get to her, all hope is lost. This fast-paced sci-fi exploitation feature features a raw-boned musical score from a variety of high quality punk-garage bands including '68 Comeback, Mick Collins, and the Royal Pendletons. — Fred Beldin |
