Machine Head |

The Evolution of the Internal Combustion Engine
Max Kelp is a geek, a geek who haplessly helps his father run a mediocre funeral home. Problem with Max is that he obviously would like to spend less time preparing the dead for burial and more time figuring out how to bring the dead back to life by using his “reverse impulse bypass manipulation.”
I was pretty amused and impressed with Machine Head given the premise (and I’ll get to that in a moment) it sounded like one of those flicks that’ll just be a fun watch and will be something you can talk about with your buds for a while.
Now, the premise, I mentioned earlier about Max’s method of reanimation using “reverse impulse bypass manipulation.” Sounds technical doesn’t it? Well, what the techobabble means is bringing the dead to life by strapping a lawnmower engine to the side of the deceased’s head and hooking him up to a home PC, a few bits and bytes and a whiff or two of carbon monoxide and “THE DEAD LIVE!”
No seriously, that’s it, I can’t make stuff like that up, that’s why I watch and critique these movies. Machine Head never falls into the popular rut of starting out tongue-in-cheek and then suddenly the Director feels the need to get serious. Thankfully we stay pretty goofy for the duration.
There is some slight nudity (from a corpse) and a bit of gore which started out looking promising but got a little too cheesy for my tastes towards the very end (a decapitation scene that I still don’t really understand what they were going for). The acting is above indie par, and Josh Walitt played geeky mad scientist with the utmost comedic precision.
A little bit Frankenstein, a little bit Re-Animator, and more than a little bit of Lawnmower-Engine-Headed Man. Okay I’ll admit that was bad, but Machine Head is worth a watch solely based on the sheer lunacy of the subject matter.

On a dark and stormy night at an Italian villa a séance is being held. A medium has been employed by the family who lives in the villa in hopes of speaking to Daniela, the recently deceased wife of Andrea. Attending the unholy proceedings with Andrea is his mother, his catatonic brother Adolfo and his brothers sluttish but very sexy wife Nais. Soon the medium becomes aware of a evil presence in the room. Suddenly the windows burst open and objects begin to fly around the room. Delirium ensues as Nais’s cloths are ripped from her body. Soon the spirit makes it’s way to the other rooms in the villa. It assaults the young nun, sister Sofia, who is employed by the family to take care of Adolfo. The nun resists and the demonic spirit move on to the next room. It is there that the angelic teenage beauty Bimba is sleeping. The room explodes in turmoil as the stunned Bimba is assaulted by an invisible force. She fights but soon becomes possessed by the sex-crazed demon who causes the young girl to perform outrageous sexual acts upon each member of the family. No one is safe as Bimba performs an erotic dance before the bedridden Adolfo. So sexually explosive is her performance that the elderly man dies of a heart attack. Sister Sofia vows that she will defeat this evil demon at the risk of losing her very soul. |

A boy (Martin Loeb) and girl (Lara Wendel) in their early teens must psychically explore their budding sexuality. Things get complicated when another girl (Eva Ionesco) enters the picture, our young hero drawn to this beauty and his old friend now a bit ignored. As the tension between the three builds, cruel games are used to express complex emotions; might someone get hurt before it is all over? An outstanding, realistic look at this developmental stage which does not shy away from the passions and confusions of puberty. The three actors are the complete cast; the movie was filmed mostly in a picturesque forest. |

The scene is a pre-French Revolution Bastille, where various political prisoners are being held: a woman who was raped and impregnated by the king, a police chief who was accused of selling bad pork, and the Marquis, who was unjustly accused of working for the overthrow of the king. The Marquis is only interested in writing his deviant stories, while his penis yearns for a little action (they argue about this frequently), the prime candidate being the jailer who likes to be buggered. The corrupt priest arranges to have the pregnant woman raped by the Marquis so they can claim the king had nothing to do with it. The priest also steals the Marquis' manuscripts and publishes them for his own profit. Things come to a head as the people rise up against the tyranny. |

5.2 |
Based on a case history, Marijan Vajda's Mosquito der Schaender deals with a young man (Werner Pochath) whose childhood abuse leads him to some pretty twisted behavior. He is shoved around in his small village, causing him to remember being beaten by his father, who also molested his young sister. Now he is a mute who lives alone with a room full of dolls which he habitually destroys, visits hookers whom he disappoints, and generally serves as the town creep. He keeps having incidents with red liquids (ketchup, ink) which he is tempted to suck off his fingers. One day he goes to a mortuary and cuts a female corpse with a knife, drinking her blood and writing "MQ" — for "Mosquito" — in blood on the wall. The next day, his mean co-workers give him a blow-up love-doll. It isn't long before Pochath starts hanging around funeral parlors on a regular basis, pulling one corpse's eyes out, decapitating another, and repeatedly stabbing a third. Needless to say, his degeneration begins to accelerate, and soon he steals some glass pipettes from a local store and hallucinates sucking blood out of anatomically correct baby dolls. From there on, the weirdness just accumulates. — Robert Firsching |

The pair encounter anthropologist Dr. Edward Foster (Stacy Keach), who agrees to lead a jungle expedition in search of the missing man. As mantraps and other jungle dangers slowly whittle away the search party, Foster becomes convinced that Susan's husband is somewhere on the tiny coastal island of Roka, home to the sacred island of Ra Ra Me. En route to the mountain, the party is captured by the Puka, a Stone Age tribe long considered extinct. Foster reveals that the tribe is cannibalistic, having been captured and forced to consume human flesh years before. This gruesome news, however, pales before Susan's discovery of her husband's fate — a fate that will surely befall the entire party if they are unable to escape. — Paul Gaita |
