Carnival Of Blood/ Curse Of The Headless Horseman (Double Feature) 1970 Leonard Kirtman Finally, amusement parks for homicidal maniacs! Though the creepy caretaker warns him that the place is haunted, Mark and his semi- hippie friends nevertheless move into the place and, sure enough, the cranium- missing cowboy appears, terrifying the hippies by splashing blood on them from a severed head he carries. Really. With a decidedly trippy feel to it- indeed, the best scene has the horseman stalking a gal on acid- Curse of the Headless Horseman also boasts a cameo by Warhol superstar Ultra Violet who wanders around carrying a Superman lunch box. The Church 1989 Michele Soavi Originally intended as the third chapter in producer Dario Argento's Demons trilogy, La Chiesa stands alone as an effective horror film centering on a haunted cathedral with a violent past. The church's history begins in Medieval Italy, when the Knights Templar massacred an entire village of suspected Satanists and built the structure upon the site of the slain peasants' mass grave. Designed by an architect/alchemist (who was buried alive within his creation), the church is filled with elaborate machinery designed to seal off all entrances if ever the spirits of the entombed villagers were to rise again... which, of course, takes place in the present when the crypt's seal is removed. As demonic forces have their way with the church's occupants, it becomes the task of the parish priest (Hugh Quarshie) and a young girl (Asia Argento, daughter of Dario) to discover the builder's last line of defense before the evil is unleashed upon the outside world. Directed by Michele Soavi (who later gained critical acclaim with the inventive Dellamorte Dellamore), this is an imaginative Gothic horror film with startling imagery straight out of a Hieronymous Bosch painting and its own well-conceived mythology. To make matters worse there is a serial killer hacking folks to death in the surrounding countryside. Nasty stabbings punctuate this truly atmoshpheric film. IN FRENCH, but still easy enough to understand. -cinefear- According to David Richards' biography of Jean Seberg, she did this film because she needed the money. Well, it's obvious she didn't do it for the script of this convoluted Spanish thriller.Seberg plays Ruth Miller, a fashion designer, spending the summer in Spain with her stepdaughter Chris, played by the former Spanish child star Marisol. Ruth and Chris do not get along particularly well. Ruth wants to get revenge on her husband, who abandoned Ruth and Chris a year earlier, by corrupting his daughter - hence the film's title. Chris has also just returned from a Swiss hospital where she received psychological treatment after being raped while taking a shower. These memories are triggered whenever it rains and she lashes out at anyone near her. It rains a lot in this movie. Into this situation comes a young English drifter, Barney, played by Barry Stokes. Ruth takes him in but he ends up falling for Chris. This causes even more tension between the two women. In the meantime, a series of brutal murders have occurred in the surrounding countryside. All indications point to Barney as the murderer. Ruth and Chris seem to think so and they stab him to death in a particularly graphic and protracted scene complete with slow-motion photography. Realizing their mistake when the real murderer is arrested the next day, they bury his body in the path of a road being built. I won't identify the real murderer except to say that the ending is completely arbitrary. The final scene of the film with Ruth and Chris chatting intimately by the pool is quite bizarre - I'm not exactly sure what is really happening there.As usual with her later work, this film is of note only for the presence of Jean Seberg. The direction and photography are routine although some flashback scenes are well handled. The score does contribute to the mood of the film. Among the performers, Barry Stokes is very effective, Marisol is quite acceptable and Jean Seberg simply seems embarrassed by the whole thing. She is never really convincing and seems particularly uncomfortable with the less than subtle implication of a lesbian relationship between Ruth and Chris.This film shares a strange number of plot points with the earlier British film "The Night Digger": both feature an unhappy relationship between a stepmother and stepdaughter, a young drifter who enters into this relationship and victims being buried in the path of a new road. In one part it attacks this sailboard race and it’s the exact same sailboard race that’s in The Last Shark. I guess they didn’t have time to film that part. This dumb surfer dude and his friends take the mayor’s boat out to get the shark, but it eats one of them so this chick has no choice but to pour gasoline all over her head and when someone shoots a flare gun the whole boat blows up. The sheriff goes after the shark next, and he takes the mayor’s helicopter and that gets wrecked too. Finally the mayor is sick of all his shit getting fucked up so he lets the mob try to stop the shark (seriously), but it just eats the mob guys so that leaves it up to the Hulk Hogan-looking dude. The HHLD and his friends succeed in blowing up the shark and he gets some reward money and pays the rent and saves his dolphin farm or whatever the hell that place is supposed to be. It’s probably the dumbest shark movie ever. IMDB
