Seven Days In Coffin | 2003 | A young woman is brutally murdered in a small village in Thailand. The police have two main suspects but they have no proof against them.Mali, the young woman, was known for being flirty and having sex with the attractive males in the area. Therefore, many men in the village are now afraid that she will come after them as a ghost. And they have no idea how right they are to be afraid. Thailand have recently started producing quite a few horrormovies. Unfortunately, most of them are very bad. When I found out that this wasn't even shown at theatres in Thailand, but actually went straight to video, I grew sceptical quickly.I guess I was right to do that. This is just another poor ghost story that can just barely be called a horrormovie. There's nothing scary about it and just like many other Thai "horror"movies, this goes more with the drama concept than with the horror concept. Apart from the terrible scene transfers, the directing looks pretty good. The scene transfers are as I said, abysmal though. It's like the scenes just stop in the middle of the scene and then continues on somewhere else in the movie, making it look like the DVD is filled with glitches, but it's still obvious that this is the way that it was filmed. When it comes to Asian movies, I usually have a hard time making out whether the acting skills are good or not. But in this movie it's pretty obvious that the cast could have used a little more experience. The thing is that they really seem to have tried to do give the movie a good story, but it just doesn't work. The story is uninteresting in so many ways. I didn't find anything about it appealing. And when we get to see a coffin shake and one of the guys scream "the coffin is shaking", I just felt like going, "well duh!". By this time I had already lost all hopes for this movie. I knew that I was in for another painful 70 minutes of sheer horror (but not in the way that I wanted). Now, after I had calmed myself after some ridiculous dialogues I had actually started to sink into the movie as I thought it got more serious by the minute. But that opinion died when the climax is reached and we get to see a woman giving birth to an obviously CGI-generated monster baby which later on hunts a man through the woods. Oh my god. I just hope that we will get to see better horrormovies from Thailand in the future because this just won't do. Thai horrormovies are rarely filled with any horror at all so I guess you would be chocked if I told you that this was filled with gore.Don't worry, it's not, it's just as dry as the chicken bone on my plate. The main thing that I really hated about the movie was the soundtrack. The action scenes had some weird soothing music playing in the background, which made it impossible for anyone to enjoy them to the fullest. There's also some annoying (and happy sounding) piano music. This was shockingly bad. SHOCKINGLY. And still I managed to find some pleasure in it. I have to say that I surprise myself sometimes. But I mean, watching a CGI monster baby hunting a man through the woods has to be somewhat entertaining. Am I wrong? Anyway, I really suggest that you keep this locked in the coffin for another seven days, if not years | IMDB

| Sexy Line | 1961 | Teruo Ishii | Sexy Chitai aka Sexy Line (1961) the last instalment in the Line series. It’s a lively portrait of the Tokyo underworld, populated by hookers, johns, crooks and cops and shot in cinéma-verité style: Ishii and cameraman Yoshida Noboru went out into the streets of Ginza and Asakusa districts, shooting without any permission whatsoever in order to capture real-life atmosphere. The result is sharp, witty and contagious, with an urgency that recalls the films of Joseph H. Lewis and Samuel Fuller (the heroine is a pickpocket, just like Richard Widmark in Pickup on South Street) and a great jazzy score by Hiraoka Seiji. | IMDB | ||

Shikoku | 1999 | Shunichi Nagasaki | 5.5 | Teenage girl Hinako returns to her home village on the Japanese island of Shikoku (which she left for Tokyo with her parents when she was a little girl) for the first time. Back then, a girl named Sayori and a boy named Fumiya were her best friends. Now Hinako meets Fumiya again, but Sayori died when she was 16. Hinako soon discovers that strange things are going on. Sayori's mother, a priestess, wants to bring her daughter back from the dead. 88 temples circle the fog-shrouded island as a seal to protect its inhabitants from the dead. But by traversing the temples in reverse order for every year of a deceased person's life, the seals can be undone and the dead person will come back to life. And Sayori's mother is about to travel the temples for the 16th time... Shikoku is the smallest of the four big Japanese islands (the others are Honshû, Kyûshû, and Hokkaidô). Written in Kanji, "Shikoku" means "island of the four lands", but the title of this film changes the first Kanji - you still read it "Shikoku", but now it means "island of the dead". This island is still a remote place far away from the great Japanese cities, there are large, fog-shrouded forests and mountains and it makes a great setting for an eerie ghost story. The film was released together with Hideo Nakata's "The Ring 2" and produced by the same company, Asmik-Ace Entertainment. Beautifully filmed and filled with atmosphere and some very spooky moments, this is a highly recommended modern "shinrei-mono" (ghost story). | IMDB |

The Sisters | 2004 | Tiwa Moeithaisong | I see dead people, the twist this time is its a rock band who see it., 2 June 2005 A quick sum up on the plot I watched it as The Sisters. A prostitute is killed in an hotel room her head was chopped off and left in the air conditioning unit.some months later a rock band spend the night in the room, only to find the spirit of the woman still in the room. Each member of the band afterwards meet grisly ends. Asian cinema as caught onto the US trend of teen horror recently this one being very Ju-on crossed with Evil Dead Trap feeling and is well enough made, but as all the other ghost j-horrors these days you'll not find anything new in it.That said its well worth a casual view probably best saved for a rainy night when you'd be stuck in watching poor TV anyway,a couple of nice set pieces will keep most horror fans happy enough.I loved the green tint used in the hotel Dario Argento used to use flushes of colour like this in his 70s thrillers. It coulda been a contender instead of a bargain bin buy I give it an average rating good effort but there's far better films like this around. | IMDB

Stop the Bitch Campaign | 2001 | Kosuke Suzuki | 5.5 | You found Bounce KoGals too serious? Thus test this finely entitled Stop the Bitch Campaign . Obviously, one should not be frightened by the vulgarity of the title nor by the jokes of Kenichi Endou. And so almost all is known as in the title, it is worth the sorrow all the same to lean a little more on this pure produces Japanese video dexploitation. Kuni ( Kenichi Endou ) is responsible dun will terekura ( Telephone Club, place where lon can telephone with girls to meet them then ) and sest given a mission: to stop the prostitution of the teenagers. To tell the truth, behind this mission hides dabord its own interest ( to benefit from it to rape teenagers ) and that of its trade, since several customers fell into traps and were made dévaliser by banked-up beds. Especially, its "pupil" ( Mikio Satou ) is made beat and nail the sex without anaesthesia by a band dados ( directed by Aya - Koharu Touno ) eager to be avenged for the played nasty trick with lune dentre it. To find Kenichi Endou in this type of role, cest to find a recurring character who passes from film film, almost unchanged and especially immortal ( a little with the manner of Suwa Tarou which often trails its declads of pervert in this type of films, and cest obviously the case here ). In addition to the series of the Stop the Bitch Campaign , cest indeed Kenichi Endou that lon finds in the rather similar principal role of the series of The Big Slaughter Club . One likes or one naime not, but force is to note that Kenichi Endou is particularly gifted in its role of pervert who pété dun lead more. It is also necessary to acknowledge that this last is the frame of film, each one of its appearances giving him all its savour. Nothing quau title, one can suspect that the film does not make in subtlety. By tackling a subject of company as delicate as the prostitution teenager, the goal nest to sell - not question of posing the bases dune unspecified reflexion. Cest thus very tout ( high-school girls, prostitution, pervert, violence, sex, lolicon ), filmed sometimes like documentary with in particular of the sequences in the streets of Shibuya, high tokyoïte place of the prostitution of the banked-up beds, the execrable actresses to give a colour of truth-false more or less involuntary realism, and a very didactic introduction during which the Japanese prostitution of the teenagers ( enjoukosai ) will naura more secrecy for you. Add to that of the caricatural characters and a scenario which will not seek much further the vague history from revenge, you will have an idea of the result. What makes finally Stop the Bitch Campaign a film and not a turnip is its rate/rhythm, its typically Japanese humour, its pure side entertainment, its excessive style and, one will laura included/understood, Kenichi Endou. Because Stop The Bitch Campaign remains in lensemble rather foreseeable with its indicated victims all, the salarymen , its banked-up beds terribly agaçantes and avid dargent for sacheter bags with hand of mark, and its justicier/pervers/psychopathe. But the not very delicate mixture dhumour, of caricature, violence and sex functions with wonder because it never seeks to claim with though it is and cherishes our prejudices in the direction of the hair. One is here on the level of the pure entertainment, of lexploitation sometimes a little heavy but that the side jusquau-boutist makes forgivable. Only small regret, final rather flat which does not make honor with the character of Kenichi Endou. Fortunately, it will be caught up with thereafter... translated from french site sancho-asia | IMDB |

Survive Style 5+ | 2004 | Gen Sekiguchi | 7.9 | By now we have grown accustomed to multiple story lines. Not only that, we seem to be expecting a bit more from these type of movies. Whenever a director starts on such a project, he knows it is going to be compared with the likes of PULP FICTION or 21 GRAMS. Unfair perhaps, but a challenge. SURVIVE STYLE 5+ is unique in the fact that it does not give the viewer time to compare. It is a roller-coaster ride from start to finish and there are only a few moments to catch your breath. Central figure is a man who is trying to kill his wife, but fails miserably and hires a foreign hit-man (Vinnie Jones). Then there's a happy family that visits a show from an arrogant hypnotist, a woman that has crazy commercial ideas and a bunch of friends that cause disaster wherever they go. They all cross paths off course, but not in a genius kind of way. Sekiguchi clearly made this film to entertain and in that it succeeds brilliantly. It is the most hilarious movie since THE BIG LEBOWSKY. imdb usercomment Author: p-leentfaar | IMDB |
