Chihwaseon 2002 Im Kwon-Taek; Im Kwon Taek Renowned Korean director Im Kwon-Taek (Chunhyang) tells the story of legendary iconoclastic Chosun Dynasty artist Ohwon (Choi Min-Sik). With little reliable documentation of the artist's life, the director (along with co-writer Kim Young-Oak) used dramatic license to fill in the details of the man's life. Born a peasant named Jang Seung-ub in 1843, the artist used his talents to escape a life of poverty. A wealthy nobleman, Kim Byung-Moon (Ahn Sung-Ki), recognizes Jang's talent, and takes him in at an early age. Master Kim recommends Jang to a respected art teacher, and his career path begins. As a young man, Jang grows in stature for his ability to flawlessly copy well-known Chinese paintings. He also falls in love with a noble's daughter, Mae-Hyang (You Ho-Jeong). Because of the class difference, he can never be with her, and he's heartbroken when she marries another man. This sets him on the path he follows for much of his life — that of a drunken wanderer. Despite his self-destructive hard drinking, his penchant for consorting with prostitutes, his impoverished background, his refusal to follow anyone's rules, the political turbulence of the times in which he lives, and the fact that he rarely signs his own work, Oh-won rises to prominence as an artist. Director Im shared the Best Director prize (with Paul Thomas Anderson) at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, and Chihwaseon was also featured in the 2002 New York Film Festival. — Josh Ralske All Movie Guide; DVD Empire; Amazon UK

Chinese Torture Chamber 1 1995 Bosco Lam A woman is accused of the murder of her husband. In order to extract a confession the court subjects her to a series of violent methods of torture. Most of the story is told in flash backs, recounting how the story leads to the ultimate gory death of her poor husband (his penis explodes). Along the way we found out about sexual martial artists, lesbian frolicking, adultery, lost love, back stabbing and a very potent aphrodisiac. The torture scenes are appropriately brutal, but generally short. There is nudity aplenty and some sex, but it never gets excessively graphic. Also there is an odd unbalance of dead serious scenes and goof-ball humor; half the film is comedy. Genre fans familiar with exploitive flicks will likely find this a tad prodding and slow, all others will sit slack jawed muttering "what the hell..." It may be a little too violent for some viewers and not sexed-up enough for others, but those willing to take a shot might enjoy it. Maybe... -IMDB USERCOMMENT- IMDB
Chinese Torture Chamber 2 1998 Kin-Nam Cho More Chinese Torture Chamber Fun!!! PART 2 is a little more serious and in-depth than the first one, but still along the same lines: 2 brothers and their wives (well 1 of the chicks is a "fiance", technically...) are out robbing people for their dinner, and come across this kung-fu master, who after hanging out with the family for a night, swears to be their friends and take care of them however he can. Kung-fu man goes on to become a head-honcho in the government, and the others come calling for hand-outs 6 months later. Kung-fu Prince gives the 2 brothers jobs in the government, but only does so 'cuz he wants the brothers to die so he can bang their women. Lots of torture and sex ensue, making for a fun film all-around. The sex and violence is poured on a little thicker in A Chinese TORTURE CHAMBER STORY 2, and this is a good thing. But Part 1 had some truly hilarious scenes that make these 2 films balance out. Both get equal votes in my book, and although they aren't the best example of what the HK CAT III genre has to offer, they're still worth a look... 8/10 -IMDB USERCOMENT- IMDB

Crime Of The Beast II 2002 David Lau I can only assume the "beast" of the title is the director, this video his crime. A lousy, debt-ridden cop gets beaten by loan sharks and fired from the force before heading to Malaysia, where he gets a hotel job. He ends up on a boat with a wedding party. The boat explodes with a lame digital explosion, washing him up on a deserted island. There are two other survivors: Grace Lam and Sophia Ngan. Grace Lam ends up disrobing constantly for baths and eventually, sex, but I swear she looked more enthusiastic when she was bathing. The guy just wants to stay with them on the island forever -- can you blame him? But ultimately he is just a scumbag and the girls decide to try and escape on their own. Terribly directed with an uncharismatic loser as the lead. A naked Grace Lam is the only draw here, but interested parties would do better downloading her picture off the internet than sitting through this stinker. Shot on video. IMDB

The Deep Red 2005 Takashi Tsukinoki Shinku means "deep red" as in dried blood. Written by Hisashi Nozawa, who committed suicide last year, this is an intense drama about two victims of the same murder. The first is the hapless survivor of a family massacre Rina Uchiyama. The second is the daughter of the killer Asami Mizukawa. Ten years after the crime, with the killer about to be executed, the survivor befriends the daughter's killer and sets in motion an elaborate revenge plan. Director Takashi Tsunikoshi handles the material well, fashioning a convincing and intriguing mystery out of the wary friendship between the two young women across the tracks. He also coaxes excellent performances from Uchiyama as the confident college student, and Mizukawa as a tattooed barkeep with a violent husband. The story slowly descends into bloody horror and climaxes with a reconstruction of the original massacre of the family, a crime that echoes the still unsolved murder of an entire family in Setagaya a few years ago. A creepy, all-too-real psychological horror story. IMDB
The Demon Within 1990 Masayoshi Sukita wo friends are going into the woods to explore something, armed with a camera. After they are sleeping, the "something" appears. It is a bright light, with the shape of a worm, flying through the dark forest. One of the guys awakes, notices the light and wakes his friend. They shoot photos and follow the light, but suddenly it disappears. Not for long, however, and the light sneaks to one of the guys from behind (what a coward), changing to the shape of a normal worm (without light) and crawls in the ear of the man. Which he doesn't seem to notice. This was the prologue, pretty atmospheric but not very scary. Ah, I forgot to mention that the man sees a strange black clothed man in the woods (they have seen him already in the train). Maybe he's here to get rid of the scum of the univ... uhm... woods? Back at home, the infected man begins to change. He develops an enormous hunger, eating and devouring what comes near his mouth. After a bit of sleep, the man awakes and goes straight to the refrigerator for a midnight snack. His wife is a bit worried when she discovers him with raw meat hanging out of his mouth. Besides, he has a strange rash on his face. The next night, the hunger seems to be gone. That's good. What's not so good is the fact that he is writhing on the bed. Then he starts to vomit slime... and blood... and something big crawls up his throat and out of his mouth... yep, it's the worm. Only he has changed a bit: he has the shape of a Gremlin, with little feet and arms, a sly, always grinning face 'cause of the dozens of (white) teeth in his mouth. The demon looks around in his new home, then starts hopping and crawling through the room without any reason. And yes, he squeals and gargles and moans to appear more threateningly. But suddenly, the black clothed man is here, grabs a cushion and throws it at the demon on the ceiling. Down he goes, and the strange man grabs him. He leaves, but the demon outwits the man and escapes. IMDB

Can Dialectics Break Bricks 1973 René Vienet 6.6 "Directed" by the French situationist Rene Vienet, this film is an exercise in intellectual absurdity. A Hong Kong martial arts movie overdubbed with French political diatribes and philosophies, designed to entertain and amuse, while proving a number of artistic and political points. The "story" details the epic battle between the proletariats and the bureaucracy, with a martial arts school as the utopian commune. Filled with amazingly absurd humor and political satire that will make you feel all intellectual inside, it’s an amazing combination of near slapstick comedy and Godardian experimentation. In many ways it seems that Vienet was trying to make some very important statements, such as the way cinema feeds ideology and his intense anger over the sad failure of socialism. It is also considered the only remaining film vision of the situationist's technique, détournement - the diversion of already existing cultural elements to new subversive purposes. But overall, this comes off as a kind of Mystery Science Theatre for fans of Guy Debord and Wilhelm Reich. IMDB

Double Suicide 1969 Masahiro Shinoda 7.7 A masterpiece of Japanese New Wave cinema, renowned filmmaker Masahiro Shinoda directs this brilliant modernist reworking of a famous 1720 bunraku (puppet theater) play written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. Set in Osaka in the 18th century, the film centers on the doomed romance between Jihei (Kichiemon Nakamura), a down and out married paper merchant passionately in love with doe-eyed courtesan Koharu (Shima Iwashita), whom he cannot afford to buy out of servitude. Koharu herself has also fallen in love with Jihei; she even starts turning away other patrons to be with him. Their love is further imperiled by Tahei (Hosei Komatsu), a rich, obnoxious merchant who flaunts his ability to buy Koharu's indenture. Suicide is the only way for the two to be together. Jihei's wife Osan (also played by Iwashita) senses the couple's intent and writes Koharu a letter pleading for his life. Touched by the sincerity of the letter, Koharu feigns reservations with killing herself, prompting Jihei to tearfully renounce her. Later, as Jihei skulks about the house as his wife runs the family business, he overhears that Tahei has at last bought his former lover's contract. Knowing that Koharu would just as soon kill herself, Osan — the ideal of the dutiful wife — offers Jihei her kimonos to pawn to save her husband's lover. Just as everything seems to be working out for the better, Osan's misinformed father bursts in just before Jihei is about to leave. The enraged old man cannot believe that Jihei is sacrificing his family for a prostitute and drags Osan away, demanding a divorce over Osan's protestations. Later, Jihei and Koharu—together at last—steal into the night, cut their hair — absolving them from societal obligations — and make love all night in a graveyard before they commit double suicide. Evil Dead Trap 3 Broken Love Killer 1993 Toshiharu Ikeda 4.7 A corpse, having neither arms, legs, nor head, and harassed by shrieking seagulls, is washed up on the rock-clad shore somewhere in the Izumo Prefecture of one of the lesser Japanese islands, thus the horrible series of bodily dismemberments, spanning some decades, and which have young women as their victims, which policewoman Nami in this flick must follow up on, and which she thereupon finds herself immersed in, and leads her into abstract interiors with many rotating fan blades in pursuit of a serial killer the toxicity of whose ambition has filled whole freezers with cataloged limbs and appendages, trunks, and other fragments of human carnage. Several times there are bodies are found near, in or around the seaside, and always where they can be got at by sea-gulls, which, like the pigeons which tear at Dr. Génessier's daughters face in Franju's Les Yeux sans visage (1959), symbolize madness. Throughout the continental plate of dissolute magma which is the Japanese cinema runs a phosphoric radiance of morbidity, veins of deterioration, supernatural malaise, and splendid new devices of torment, Evil Dead Trap 3: Victimage of Exquisite Mutilation, it may be, is eclipsed by it's predecessors, as it is somewhat more lackadaisical but none the less, and although, like the first two films, is has no connexion with those flicks with which it shares it's title, is, as such, worthy to be dismissed as yet another untarnished diadem in the triplicate crown of J-Horror, whose threefold platforms include Dissension, Disarray, and Moral Leprosy. Moreover, another anology about Japan, is that it is like some vast soup-ladle, infested with maggots, and dispensing it's putrifaction to the lower Sub-Asian Penensula IMDB
