Corallus caninus originates from Amazonia and several variations of the species can be found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia,Brazil, Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana. Emerald originating from Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana are collectively known as Guyana Shield Emeralds and are all very similar in appearance. The Amazon Emerald Tree boa, found around the Amazon basin in Brazil, tend to be larger and heavier than the Guyana Shield Emeralds. They have very distinctive white dorsal markings that can span the length of body, unbroken.

Their altitude distribution is estimated from sea level to about 1000m. They are to be found in lowland tropical rain forest areas of high annual precipitation.

Etymology

In 1758 Carlos Linnaeus named the Emerald Tree Boa as Corallus caninus. It is thought that he did so due to the Emeralds' distinctive dog-like head, and elongated maxilliary (canine) teeth. The word caninus in latin means "of dogs".
