That first year, I stayed at the private house of a sweet old Swedish lady, who lived in the suburb of Nacka, about 20 minutes from the city centre by bus. I still remember the incredible freshness of the air as I struggled with my case along the country road from the bus stop. Even though I was shattered after travelling the whole day, as soon as I'd settled into my room, I just HAD to take a walk around outside!

It must have been around 11 pm, but it was still quite light outside, and the birds were busy singing away. I can still remember the thrill I felt walking around those quiet country lanes, knowing I was finally there in Stockholm! It may sound corny but it truly was a magical feeling!

When I made the trip into the city the next day, I was in awe at the beauty of the place, there was just SO much to try and take in, I didn't know where to start!
If I remember correctly, I think the first place I explored was Gamla Stan (The Old Town). This is situated on an island right in the centre of the city, and is a wonderful place full of 16th and 17th century tall buildings, lining narrow cobbled streets. Along those streets are scores of quaint little antique stores, and atmospheric restaurants.

Right in the centre of Gamla Stan, is Stortorget ( The Great Square), which is famous from an ABBA fans point of view for the "Fur coats picture", which features the group standing next to the old water pump in the centre of this lovely square. This is a perfect spot to sit with a "Sia glace" (the BEST Swedish Ice cream!), and just people watch during a hot summers day, or perhaps one of those wonderfully long Stockholm summer evenings! I can sit there for hours personally!
