Pointing the Way is a series of water-colours with gold leaf based on the symbolic hand gestures or mudras of traditional Buddhist images. With these and other recognized symbols and some of my own creation I have made an attempt to present some aspects of the Message of the Buddha in a pictorial way. I have used watercolours because of their fluidity in application and mostly unforeseen changes as they dry, a good metaphor of the Buddhist view of the world, the gold leaf adding to the same symbolism with its play of light, sometimes solid, sometimes almost disappearing. Some of these pictures were shown at Wild Cherry, the gallery of the London Buddhist Centre, in 2002 and again at Namaste near Camberwell Green, London, together with new work, as part of A Lotus in Flower - the first Buddhist Art Festival in Britain in 2005.
