Newstead Abbey.
Lord Byron
The
story of the 'White Lady' ghost is one of the many attractions of
Newstead Abbey. The building and park are owned by Nottingham City
Council and were once the ancestral home of the poet Lord Byron. The
house is open for viewing and the gardens are a wonderful attraction
at any time of the year. Access is from the A60 Nottingham/Mansfield
road at Ravenshead.
Lord Byron.
The
Abbey is best know for its links with the poet George Gordon 6th Lord
Byron.
He was one of the most flamboyant of the English poets,
famous for his turbulent life and his poetry.
Mounting debts and hostile opinions in Georgian England
forced him, after his disastrous marriage, to travel in Europe and
the near East.
He died during the Greek struggle for liberation to
win independence from Turkish rule.
The poet's remains lie in the family vault at Hucknall's
St. Mary Magdalene Church.
