Creswell Crags
Creswell Developments | Location
Creswell
Crags is a magnesium limestone gorge full of caves. During the last Ice
Age the gorge was one of the most northerly places inhabited by our early
Neolithic ancestors.
Archaeological
evidence has proved the between 45,000 and 10,000 years ago there were
warmer periods. During this time the land was somewhat like the Russian
Steppes and early man was hunting mammoth, reindeer, bison and wolf.
Finds in the cave have included both human and animal bones.
A
Visitor Centre on the site is a wealth of information about the Ice Age
hunter brought through various displays, cave tours and events. Guides,
dressed as cavemen and women point out the points of interest around the
site. There are a number of walks around the site which has been designated
a Site of Special Interest.

Crags development.
Doctor David Bellamy at Creswell Crags In September. He
was there to celebrate the removal and landscape restoration of a former
sewage works at the internationally important stone age site. Representatives
of local and regional authorities, national agencies and local communities
were there to see Severn Trent's commitment to local communities and to
sustainable management of the environment. The relocation of the sewage
treatment plant and restoration of the site is a major boost to the goal
of achieving World Heritage status for one of Britain's most important
stone age sites. The £4.2 million cost is one of the most significant
contribuitons ever made in Britain to conserving a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Creswell
Crags is the most northerly known habitation point of Neanderthal man
who lived 45,000 years ago during the Ice Age and the place where the
earliest evidence of art in Britain has been found, over 12,000 years
old. David spoke on the importance of the site on the Crags Meadow which
is on the site of the old sewage works whilst a giant mammoth looked on.
