June summary

This summary highlights the occurrences of the best birds of the last month, June 2008. All records are subject to acceptance by the Northants Birds (Northamptonshire Bird Report) Records Committee. Apart from a singing male Icterine Warbler, June proved to be typically quiet with perhaps the other most notable feature being the national influx of Crossbills producing small numbers of birds at widely-scattered locations across the County.

Whooper Swan  The roaming adult from Pitsford Res and Stanford Res visited Earls Barton GP on 23rd-25th.

Egyptian Goose  One visited Ditchford GP on 10th.

Shelduck  A pair at Earls Barton GP made a second breeding attempt and a brood of ducklings was seen there towards the month’s end.

Garganey  A drake was at Earls Barton GP between 4th and 13th.

Little Egret  Singles visited Bozenham Mill on 6th, Earls Barton GP on 20th and Stanwick GP on 28th.

Black Kite One worn individual was watched heading north over Hanging Houghton on 14th, although the possibility that it was a hybrid could not be ruled out. Another with jesses attached was seen at Castle Ashby on 18th.

Osprey  One flew NE over Earls Barton GP on 25th.

Goshawk  One over Fineshade Wood on 17th.

Hobby  A maximum count of 4-5 at Earls Barton GP on 13th.

Peregrine   One over Northampton mid-month.

Quail  Single males were singing between Arthingworth and Kelmarsh on 3rd, near Fawsley between 5th and 16th, near Maidwell on 7th and at Bugbrooke on 11th.

Oystercatcher  A pair with three well grown young was seen at on location in the Nene Valley on 10th.

Curlew  One at Earls Barton GP on 29th.

Dunlin  Singles visited Earls Barton GP on 11th, 16th and 19th.

Greenshank  One at Earls Barton GP on 13th.

Green Sandpiper  Returning migrants at Earls Barton GP from 23rd.

Wood Sandpiper  One visited Earls Barton GP on 7th.

Common Sandpiper  One at Earls Barton GP on 4th.

Turnstone  One was on the dam at Sywell CP on 1st.

Yellow-legged Gull  Four third-summers were at Earls Barton GP on 4th and up to 7 were present at Ditchford GP from mid-month.

Little Tern  One at Earls Barton GP on 16th.

Turtle Dove  The very poor year continued with records only from Arthingworth, Fineshade Wood, Horn Wood and Twywell.

Nightingale  Males were reported singing at Arthingworth, Pitsford Res and Yardley Chase.

Icterine Warbler  A singing male was trapped and ringed at Stanford Res on 14th. It was not seen subsequently. This individual formed part of a mini-influx nationally, with others inland in Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Manchester. This constitutes only the second record for Northamptonshire, the first being at Badby Wood on 28th May 1947. The good fortune of its observers will be widely acknowledged.

Golden Oriole  Singing males at both Brigstock and Pitsford Res on 1st.

Raven  Records from Bugbrooke, Fawsley and Thrapston GP with a maximum of 6 at Whittlebury on 29th.

Siskin  Two juveniles on a garden feeder in Kettering on 28th.

Crossbill  The ongoing national influx produced 20+ at Denton Wood on 10th with 9 there on 14th, 10-15 at Wakerley Great Wood and 2 at Paulerspury on 16th with 9 at nearby Hulcote, 12 at Fineshade Wood and 4 at Harlestone Heath on 17th and 5 at Cottesbrooke on 22nd.
