For the Windows 98 users that gets a GPF (General Protection Fault) when using the version 1.3d of Routerlog.

The version 1.3d of RouterLog was compiled with the Microsoft .NET environment that seems to give problems with some Windows 98 users. The solution is to use the version 1.3a. They only difference would be the Admin password not getting encrypted when saved to the registry. You can get the
1.3a version at:

**********************************************

When used in conjuction with the D-Link 704P and firmware 2.57bulid3, RouterLog (1.3d) cannot log into the D-link.
Router Status in the Wan Type field just shows " *** Parser error " or " *** Error parsing status content *** " in all other fileds.
To fix this problem you would have to flash your D-Link router with the AMIT bios. We cannot take the responsability if anythings happens to your router after making this modification.
it is known that AMIT HiP-400E / D-link 704 & P firmware are all interchangeable. Your will just get the Vendors customized webview. If you consider doing so it is well documented with success in the DSLreports D-link/SMC forums ( http://www.dslreports.com/forums/18 ).

If you find that you Cannot flash back to your original firmware..the " CRASH " approach may be rquired. Make sure your using original SMC .exe firmware as it will respond correctly to update your router when it is detected in the " Crash " mode condition.

CRASH approach: Reset the router by holding a metal object (ie: paper clip) to pins 3 and 8 of the Com port (9 pin Connector) for 5 to 6 seconds after turning it on. (See diagram below)

9 pin Male "D" connector pinout
(Front (user side) view)

When light M1 flashes rapidly remove the short. Now run the SMC firmware .EXE. You will know you have reset the Barricade if the M1 light blinks about 8 times really fast and then returns to a normal steady blink (about once every second).

"Thanks for your feedback.  I realize you did not want to become an expert in multiple products (especially ones you may not be familiar with), but let me provide you some experience report so you can help others with your RouterLog product.

[1] It was not clear to me before starting this all, but there are two DI-704P products: HW version A1 (aka Grey or Brown box; with a serial port) and HW version B1 (aka silver box; with NO serial port).  This in addition to the older DI-704 product.  Firmware on B1 is now upgradeable to 2.70buildXX as shown on the US Dlink site.  Firmware for A1 on the US site is only 2.57build3, as you state, and does have the problems noted.  Dlink's Taiwan site has provided an upgrade from 2.57build3 to 2.60build2 for the DI-704P (A1) as of 4th November 2002.  See http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/info.nsf/7cb24fd9ec51d1fc48256adf002ad439/d25db31bbac63ac648256c600018fddf?OpenDocument.  This is also identical to and works for the DI-704 model. This DLink upgrade is likely preferable as warranty and compatibility with future revisions still applies.  But 2.60build2 still exhibits the same problems with 2.57build3.  Unless you are logged in via the WWW page first, the log retrieval and "show router status" do not work.  They work fine if you have separately logged in via IE first.

2.60build2 adds nice features similar to the B1 model such as Dynamic DNS, router table, and SNMP support.  It does not add the syslogd/email-log capability like 2.61 for the B1 model has.  The Dlink build has the new, more graphical interface as opposed to the older Dlink and SMC product which simply used AMIT's basic graphic/text interface exclusively.

[2] The 1.95j upgrade really requires proper "install notes".  I would suggest you point people to "http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,5715105~root=dlink~mode=flat" which worked well for me.  This after screwing up the router using another, improper set of notes from the same site.  The DI-704P does have a reset port that can be used to put the unit in CRASH mode (which means it defaults to an internal ROM and waits for a TFTP connection to upload its firmware).  Using the reset port is much preferable and more reliable than shorting the pins on the serial port.  Also, there is a slow blinking light mode before entering the fast blinking CRASH mode.  One must hold the reset button/condition until the second stage of fast blinking lights (about 10 seconds total).

The 1.95j upgrade takes you back the original AMIT OEM basic graphic/text interface but fixes all the problems as you have stated.  You also get the new features (Dynamic DNS, SNMP, Router table, etc.) as with the other Dlink tool.

Overall, please at least update your FAQ to point directly to the above message for 1.95j.  You might also point people to the DLink Taiwan site in case they add 2.61 sometime in the future.

Thanks for your help otherwise.

Randy"
