There are at present about 380,000 listed properties in Britain, the majority of which are old. Indeed, any building constructed before 1700 which survives in anything remotely resembling its original condition is automatically listed.

The most important buildings are listed Grade I, but the majority are listed Grade II and these in the main are the buildings occupied for private residence and are much loved and cherished by their owners.
