RAF Shawbury - Tour 2005

The Community admin team visits the RAF Storage facility as it

Opens it doors for the first visit to Enthusiasts in 2005

After a difficult journey in the snow and ice, it was with great expectation that we arrived at the holding car park waiting for the bus to pick us up and  drive us onto the airfield. We had half expected a phone call the night before to inform us that the event was going to be cancelled as most of the UK was gripped in a Siberian spell which had brought many parts of the country to a halt, however we were met by our guide for the day Sqn Ldr Locke who proceeded to brief us on the days agenda, informing us that photography was allowed in all areas of the base however no photographs of the Puma wreck please, and make sure you remove all hats when onto the pan (heck it was freezing out there!!) The plan was to visit the various hangers around the airfield in the order of 14,13,10,11,17,18,4,3,5,2,1

This would cover aircraft in deep storage and then the active side of the airfield including a visit to the Horsa project and the hanger where the Westland team were preparing the AH-64's for delivery to the Army Air Corps, on this occasion we were advised that we could not talk to the technicians as the workload was so intense at the present time that they could not be interrupted, the replacement of the Gazelle with the Apache being at a very high pitch evidenced by the growing number of Gazelle airframes arriving for storage within the facility.

We drove around the airfield across the active runway where Sqn Ldr Locke explained that the two Squirrels to our left were practising landing on a hill, there being two small grassed mounds where two helicopters were giving their pilots a nerve racking test, Sqn Ldr Locke explained it was a difficult thing to learn until you got used to it. We were heading for hanger 14 one of many storage hangers over the far side of the airfield some grass covered some not, but all holding treasures we were yet to unveil!....This first hanger held a strange combination of airframes, some looked airworthy others maybe not .Within this hanger the following airframes were noted:-

Hanger 14

After a quick walk across from hanger 14 to the next point hanger 13, the first sight we were presented with was the wreck of the crashed Squirrel ZJ258 There again was an interesting selection of airframes in this hanger ( and the hanger heating was working!!)

Main ASP and Airfield

A this point we had finished visiting the storage hangers and boarded the coach to bring us back to the operating side of the airfield, a hasty picture of the fire dump Jet Provost T.3 XN549 was taken as we then headed for the main operating ASP.

The weather was pretty awful but at least it wasn't snowing!, we all removed our headgear and braved the elements for a quick set of pictures, we were also able to photograph the Scout that was on display outside one of the buildings, it has recently been restored to it's former glory.

The Scout AH.1 was XV123

Hanger 4

This hanger belonged to the DHFS Squadron, there were a couple of Squirrels in here from Middle Wallop, as well as a Civilian Gazelle and a couple of new Gazelle booms which did not have serials allocated, as they were from the "spares" stock.

That was the end of the tour, the weather did not dampen things in any way and all 50+ enthusiasts seem to have enjoyed the visit. The only other aircraft seen was a brief visit by RN Jetstream T.3  ZE441/79  which arrived to drop off the defence secretary Geoff Hoon.

Thanks to Doug Marshall, Dennis Dixon, Wayne Trigg and of course Sqdn Ldr Martin Locke
