Mexico 2002
Region: Akumal (near Cancun)
Camera: Reefmaster CL.
Sea dives were all within short range of the dive centre and were of a
consistent 'spur and groove' topology. This is characterised by
alternating coral formations and sand chutes, perpendicular to the
shoreline. Where the depth reaches 20 to 40m, the coral formations
can present themselves as a mini wall.
The barrier reef is part of the Belize Barrier reef, the largest
barrier reef in the northern hemisphere.
An alternative dive experience is offered by Cenotes.
These are fresh-water underground cave systems that are mostly
interconnected. Cave diving is the most dangerous type of diving but
a few Cenotes have been well explored and I felt confident to try them.
