Sharm El Sheikh, 2005

Dived a combination of boat, drift and shore dives at sites including:

  • Ras Kati and Temple
  • Thomas and Jackson reefs (Saw hammerheads off Jackson)
  • Shark and Yolanda reefs
  • Anemone City
  • Dunraven wreck
  • White Knight (saw Guitar shark cruise past in the blue)
  • Drift dive from Ras Bob to Ras Nazrani
  • Ras Ghazlani

My highlight was definitely seeing the hammerhead sharks.  The weather was good and calm, so we dived on the outside of Jackson reef near the wreck and swam out into the blue at about 15m depth.  We saw a grop of about 12 hammerheads very quickly.  Their dark shapes slinked eerily below us!  There was another shark around that day - an oceanic white tip.  I saw someone else's video footage, and it was incredible.

Fish
An arabian surgeonfish Bigeye Emperor fish School of blackbarred surgeonfish Pair of Coachmen, also called bannerfish
Schools of slender fusiliers with their distinctive tails are often seen over reefs Puffer fish are very common in Ras Mohammed National Park There are many species of Goby and Blennny. Not sure exactly which one this is. Some of the most common fish on the reef, golden Jeweled Fairy Basslets
Pipefish are very small and difficult to find. A school of yellowfin Goatfish
Batfish are often seen in large schools.. ..and sometimes singularly or in small groups Unicornfish were in abundance on Shark and Yolanda reefs
Corals
A coral scene near the shore Yellow waver coral often looks like a cabbage Beware of fire coral
Soft corals will grow anywhere, even on an old rope.. ..and even come in a variety of colours
