Courses and Workshops

You will need to think carefully about the fit of any design to your style and the organisation. I find it almost impossible to use anyone else's design but my own. These ideas may spark off your own versions. I hope they all go very well.

Best Practice

This gives a simple process to help professionals share their best practice and learn from each other. It uses facilitating skills as an example but is applicable much more widely.

Career Development Workshop

This helps people help each other think about what they want to do and go about looking for a new job. It is backed by a series of handouts.

Change course for Couples

This course helps couples, affected by an office relocation, cope positively with the change.

Coconsulting Introduction

This introduces people quickly to the practice of "coconsulting". Two people take equal turns listening to and supporting each other. The introductory session can be both rewarding and great fun.

Coping with change for couples

A large employer was moving offices from London to Nottingham and wanted to help people cope well with the change. Many of the people moving were half of a couple, in one case son and mother. We decided to work with groups of couples directly.

Counselling Skills

A small multidisciplinary group of managers learned counselling skills to help their subordinates develop and build their team. The senior manager's long term evaluation was that "The course was extremely worthwhile. We developed the listening and counselling skills that are essential for today's managers. The process also built relationships in our management team."

Customer Care

This workshop helped a team in Local Government develop their strategy for improving customer care in their Council. They also learned to value each other and how to work well together.

Facilitating Skills

This workshop enabled professionals who used these skills to learn from each other's best practice both theoretically and experientially. The same method will work with other professional skills.

Influencing Skills Course

This is an example of a two-day version of this course. It helps people use a model of influencing and practice it in role-plays that the participants design themselves.

Influencing Skills Homework

These questions, models and exercises will help people prepare for an influencing skills course or anyone think about their influencing of others.

Influencing Skills Training

This gives the rationale and results of influencing skills training together with an outline of a four-day open course.

Team working between teams

This shows how to run a short workshop or meeting that builds team working between teams.

Large Group Development Day

This article describes the structure, process, planning, what happened and the outcomes of a development day for a large administration department.

Redundancy Counselling Workshop

This workshop helped people help each other using a series of exercises. It was well received and very effective.

Role of District Manager

This is a short workshop to help senior managers develop and clarify their roles.

Secretaries and managers

This is a short workshop to build understanding and co-operation between these groups of staff. It used the "Team of Two" model. You can use the design with other groups too.

Strategy Workshop

This uses the principles of "Appreciative Inquiry" to help an organisation develop a successful strategy that people follow with commitment.

Team Briefing

This design can create much more participation and two way communication than the conventional approach.

Using these materials

I am entirely happy for you to use or draw on any these materials in any way you think will be helpful. I am keen to have my work, and the work of the people I have learned from, used.

If you can, do you think you could say where you found them? One way might be to give a link back to the site or to my email address. This will help these positive ideas to spread, and help my business, too.

Thank you

Nick Heap
