Monthly Newsletter to all Members : November 2004

Last Meeting 7th Oct. AGM

Many thanks to the twenty members who braved the elements, and attended this important meeting.  A very good meeting, and a lively discussion, led to a good direction for the 2004 / 05 season.  A copy of the notes are attached.

After the break, we were royally entertained by member Chris Fry, who played a marvellous mixture of music from around the world, in his usual inimitable style.  Many thanks Chris, for a wonderful evening.  Incidentally, Chris was also performing in Cross Keys the week later, alongside a very young but exceptionally talented ‘finger-picker’ style guitarist.  It was simply a brilliant evening, with an audience of 50 – 60!  And Chris’s classical selection brought the house down!

As often happens, the evening continued for many in the local Eli Jenkins Public House, when guitars were brought out and much fun was shared.  Thanks to everyone for sending us home happy!

Next Meeting – Thursday 4th November

7.15 for a 7.30 p.m. prompt start, at our usual Norwegian Church Arts Centre venue

Something different for this month – John Watkins is giving an illustrated talk on the rhythms of South American guitar music.  Some time ago John’s similar talk on the music of Barrios was very well received, and I am sure this month’s entertainment will be equally well received.

After coffee, there should be about an hour for Members to Play, so don’t forget to bring your guitar!

NOTES OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING : THURSDAY 7th OCTOBER 2004

1.             Present:                20 members

2.                Apologies:             Charles Roberts, Andy Mulligan

3.             Notes of the Last Meeting:                Accepted as a true record.  Proposed: Peter Stokes; Seconded: Nick Jackson.  The failure to action certain decisions was noted; Bill Allen agreed to pursue the pricing and purchase of a suitable portable music stand with lighting.

4.                Chairman’s Remarks : Kate Williams

¨       Kate reported her biggest disappointment was the poor attendance at the Duo Lenz concert - marvellous music, supported by a small audience.  The reasons, including the time of year, and the absence of adequate marketing, were discussed.

¨       The annual children's’ competition was again well worth the effort, with a large audience, and thanks to sizeable donations, a £56 profit was recorded.

¨       Kate considered that the Committee needed to discuss the optimum time to present concerts.

Kate was thanked warmly for her report, and for her efforts and enthusiasm during the year.

5.                Treasurer’s Report : Nick Jackson

Nick tabled his report, and the income & expenditure accounts for the year  October 2003 to September 2004.  Members noted a  balance of £1,107.18.

Membership had shrunk to 26, and a brief discussion concentrated on a membership drive.  The proposed barbecue had not materialised; thought was given to an official Members’ Barbecue.  However, the unofficial Hay on Wye weekend had proved a real success.

The concerts had together shown a loss, which was in some way helped by encouraging raffle receipts.

After clarifying a number of members’ questions, Nick’s report was proposed by Peter Stokes and seconded by George Baker.  Nick was thanked for his year’s hard work, and congratulated on such a healthy balance sheet, so professionally presented.

8.                    Programme for Forthcoming Year

A lively discussion brought forth the following ideas for the Committee to consider:

¨       David Nash - half concert, flamenco style

¨       Spanish Classical Guitarist Dal Pena

¨       John Mills concert - after a two year gap - or an illustrated talk with guitar

¨       David Caswell concert

¨       Gareth Rees-Roberts concert (Gareth won the Julian Bream prize)

¨       Members’ Barbecue

¨       A half concert and talk by one of the RWCMD’s talented students

¨       Liaison with a local Latin American or Spanish Society, e.g. Chapter Arts Centre

¨       A social evening with a raffle - Peter Stokes affered to supply wine

¨       A talk / demonstration by a guitar maker

The Committee was charged with arranging the programme details.

9.     Any Other busines

Vote of thanks:  A formal vote of thanks was given to Bill Allen for his untiring valuable support.  Bill’s efforts in controlling the CD Library were praised, and his refreshment duties at the monthly meetings was likewise appreciated.  Bill responded accordingly.

Concert Programmes and Posters:  After discussion it was agreed that Ken Wade would continut with programme production, whilst Jan Watkins would produce the Posters.  The membership expressed their gratitude to both members for their kind offers.

This concluded the business of the meeting.  Members repaired to the coffee area before enjoying member Chris Fry’s half concert!
