Red Grouse Another bird of the high moors, sharing a similar habitat to the Black Grouse, though far more numerous, thanks to the breeding programmes of the shooting estates. They are often seen whilst out hiking. They have the habit of laying low in the grass until you are almost on top of them and them running off a few feet before flying off low to the ground repeatedly shouting g’back, g’back g’back - not for the faint hearted as you can get quite a shock as the serenity is suddenly disturbed by this flurry from just a couple of feet away.
