Capercaillie Seen at Loch Garten RSPB Reserve in Scotland in April 2002, not exactly a local sighting but still an interesting bird to see. Here they are seen on the Lek. These are males trying to impress the females. It meant an early start, around to catch sight of them on the breeding grounds - a 4.30 am start to the day. The one shown below is caught mid leap. They leap 10-12‘ in the air as they strut their stuff. An even more unusual sight to see was these large birds sat in trees. You think from the size of them - very large turkey sized, that they would dwell on the ground.
