Oystercatcher

Oystercatcher

Whilst quite pretty looking birds, I think that they are somewhat unusual too. The long bright orange ‘carrot’ bill looks out of place and very vicious the way they stab it into the ground in their hunt for food. The boards themselves appear comical when seen in large groups whilst resting, all stood on one leg facing in the same direction. Oystercatchers are very common in late Winter and Spring along the coastal margins and grasslands especially on the sea front promenade behind the sea wall at Seaton Carew where these shots were taken. They are quite used to people being around, as long as you don’t try to get too close.
