Mallard

Mallard

The Mallard is one of the commonest ducks in these parts, in fact second only to the Tufted Duck. They are very colourful and very responsive to humans who keep them well fed. They breed on all of the local ponds and can be seen on every outing. The last photo below, shows the penalty paid for being different. This white duck was paired with a drake Mallard. Whilst I was present, a Mute Swan cob grabbed it by the wing and ripped it off. It certainly survived many months after the event, though I have not seen it recently.
