Lapwing

Lapwing

Also known as the Peewit hereabouts, they are very common in the Spring and Summer, especially on the ponds at Saltholme and on the surrounding rough grassland where they nest. At first sight they look to be a black and white coloured bird, but seen close up, their flanks are a rainbow of colours. They tolerate a certain amount of human presence, but at breeding time they are very antagonistic swooping and mobbing humans as well as Gulls if they venture too near nesting sites.
