Herons are a common sight in this part of the world. I counted 32 one day on East Saltholme Pond where they were spaced 10-15 yards apart. They aren’t often seen in those numbers, but you can always see them around. On Cowpen Pond you get the odd one calling in but they only spend a couple of hours there before moving on. I think there are too many people walking around the pond, as they do not like the presence of humans and are easily spooked. It amazes me that such large birds can build nests in the tops of trees, such as the one below at the Washington Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. |
