Web Design Home             Do It Yourself Web Design          Get Neil To Design Your Site

Although I am currently working full time, I have decided to continue designing websites. With no formal training I have so far managed to create this site and one for Debden Primary School. Using the experience from these two projects I am now able to offer a design service to schools, along with training on how to update the website once it is up and running.

Should your school, or organisation want to employ me to design or perform a major update to your current website I would expect to work in the following manner.

  • An initial visit to the school where I would meet with the head teacher and/or the ICT coordinator to discuss what exactly the school requires for its website.
  • After the meeting I would go away and create the main structure and background design.
  • Once the structure is complete I would e-mail the school to request the information that would be necessary for the website. I would also suggest a date for a second visit.
  • During the second visit I would collect this information and to take any necessary digital images for the website.
  • After taking all of the information away I would complete the website, ready to deliver it to the school on a set day.
  • On the day of delivery I would expect to spend the full day in the school. The morning would see me in a meeting with the head teacher, checking that the website meets the requirements of the school. In the afternoon I would upload the site onto the server that is specified by the LEA and train nominated staff members on how to update the website. As a qualified teacher with a full CRB clearance I can also train some pupils if that is what your school wants.

The biggest question that schools ask is about the cost of producing a website. I am well aware of the limited nature of resources in schools. Depending on the number of pages I would expect to charge the equivalent of three or four days supply.

The only other conditions that I would add to this work is that on the Copyright/Credits page I am allowed to put a link to this page (using the logo at the top of this page), and that your website would be listed on this page as well.

To create websites I use Microsoft FrontPage 2000 and Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000 V2. These programs are widely available as part of Microsoft Office. Being part of Microsoft Office, most schools have access to the programs, which means that schools do not have to pay out large sums of money for software with very limited uses beyond creating and maintaining their websites.

LATEST INFORMATION
I now have two primary school websites that are live with another one under construction.

Debden Primary School

Great Chesterford Primary School

I have some experience working with plug-ins. If you have a sound file or a flash game/animation I can easily insert it onto a page for you. The only problems with these files is that they can take a while to down load.

I have recently discovered the website www.miniclip.com which supplies free games for use on websites. For demonstration purposes I have put a game here. It takes around 50 seconds to download over a 56k modem, although broadband/ISDN/ADSL connections will cut the time dramatically. It should be noted that I have in a window by itself to keep the download time as low as possible. The only link is to get the Flash player that the game needs to run, although most web browsers have the player installed.
