This page contains information on where to find free software for use in schools. The first free resource is LOGO. This can be downloaded from http://www.softronix.com/logo.html LOGO is one of the most popular and long lasting pieces of software in schools. First starting on the BBC in the 1980s it has been constantly updated and is useful in maths lessons on shape and space as well as for teaching some control aspects of ICT with the "To" function. Val Mitchell of Debden Primary School has suggested another piece of software from Softronix. Their Logic software is good for teaching wider aspects of the control units in primary education. You can find the software at http://www.softronix.com/logic.html Daniel Fyles from St James' Primary School in Ashton-Under-Lyne has recommended some Sound Recording Software called Audacity. It is available from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ who are continually developing the software. The download page also lists some of the known bugs (unusually honest for an IT company!!!) and has links for versions for different systems such as Mac and Windows. Frederic Com, one of the graphical designers I work with at Vu 2 Media recently introduced me to this software for taking partial screenshots. Using it to take screen shots of part of the screen reduces the file size that you get by using the Print Screen key and then cropping the image in Word. The software itself is simple to use, although there are some advanced features for those with the time to get more involved in the software. The zoom window that appears when you are selecting the area you want makes it easy to get the area you want. You can download the software from http://www.webattack.com/download/dlmwsnap.shtml and, as with all the software listed here, it's free.
This page is open for suggestions
of other free software for schools. To qualify the software must be
downloadable from the Internet for no charge. Please E-mail
me if you have any suggestions that you think should be added to this
page.
