Mathematics was my specialist subject when I was training and I have retained a keen interest in Mathematics Education and regularly attend the Colloquium in Mathematics Education that is run by the Faculty of Education at Cambridge University.

When it comes to mental maths sessions at the start of 'numeracy' lessons one of my favourite activities is Countdown. Just like on the TV show I pick six numbers at random and come up with a target number. The biggest difference is the diamond card that I have introduced into the game. It allows the children to choose a number from one to ten that they would find useful in order to get to the target number. Click on the link for more information and a number grid that you can print out to use at home.

I am a great fan of the NRICH website and often use puzzles from the website in investigative sessions. The following pictures show some examples of interactive displays that are based on these puzzles. Click on the following pictures to enlarge.

Zero to One Number Line

This is a picture of part of one of my maths display. At the top are equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages with the times tables underneath. Below that, but not shown on this picture is an interactive puzzle that I made based on the sliding puzzle toys that were popular in the late 1980s.
