Most of the History work I have done with children has been looking at
ancient cultures such as Greece and Egypt. Egypt is a topic that always
captures the interest of children for a range of reasons and the Year 5
class that I worked with on this topic were no exception.
One of the more popular parts of the work was when we created our own life size mummy from one of the tallest children in the class. One of the Learning Support Assistants drew around the child on two pieces of paper which were then stapled together and stuffed with news paper to create a 3D body shape. This was then wrapped in toilet roll and stained with old tea-bags to create the mummy you can see below.
The mummy was surrounded by facts that the children had discovered by that point. Beside the mummy were two pictures of some Egyptian gods created with the aid of an OHP and some more classroom assistants. The first time a child saw one of them he asked if it was a real Egyptian artifact.
This is what the children had to say about the pictures: Some of the class have translated their names into hieroglyphics using a web page. Horus and Re-Harakhte were enemies. This is a picture of Anubis and Re-Harakhte, Anubis is the god of cemeteries and mummification. Re-Harakhte is a sun god. Re-Harakhte started out as Re and Horus then they got united. The web address is www.eyelid.co.uk/e-name.htm The children also enjoyed looking at the British Museum website for Ancient Egypt. |
