The children I have worked with have performed a range of DT tasks from moving toys to musical instruments and biscuits. This page has pictures of an activity based on an activity I first met at a SATRO event - Techlinks which is held annually at Duxford Imperial War Museum near Cambridge.
The task is called Ball Race or Marble Run depending on who you ask. The aim is to use thin card, sellotape and scissors to create a roller coaster route for a marble to get from the top to the bottom of the run. The pieces of card all begin as one third of a sheet of A4 card which has been cut lengthways into three seven centimetre wide strips. This is a great task for the end of term as it can be done in a whole afternoon.
The picture below show a marble run with lots of tricks including steps and a loop the loop. One of the greatest challenges in this task is to create adequate supports for the run from the same basic materials as the rest of the run.
Working on moving toys was a good long term project which involved working with cams. To aid understanding of this I worked on the display shown below. This display was interactive with cams that worked in the same way that they would on the children's work.
