SWAT Painting Guide

A guide to how I painted my Street Violence SWAT models

There seems to be some discrepency as to whether SWAT teams wear blue uniforms with black body armour, or black uniforms with blue body armour. I was forced to watch 'The Negotiator' and 'Leon' several times to make sure I got it the right way around (Oh, the horrors of research...)

Unless otherwise stated, all paints used are acrylics.

Undercoat
The model is undercoated in matt black (I use a spray can of either Citadel Chaos Black, or car body matt black primer)
Uniform
The uniform was given a basecoat of Citadel 'Nightworld Blue', and then highlights of Citadel 'Ultramarine Blue' and Citadel 'Enchanted Blue' were drybrushed onto the uniform.
Body Armour, Webbing and Helmets
These were given drybrushed highlights of Citadel 'Codex Grey' and Citadel 'Fortress Grey' over the black undercoat, to enhance the raised edges. The details were then picked out using Citadel 'Chainmail'.
Masks & Goggles
The straps on the goggles were left black. The frames and the optics were painted using Citadel 'Chainmail'. The optics on the gas masks were then painted using Tamyia 'Clear Yellow', whilst those on the goggles were painted using Tamyia 'Clear Blue'.
Weapons
The metal areas on the weapons were given a basecoat of Citadel 'Boltgun Metal', followed by a wash of Citadel 'Armour Wash'. The stocks of the MP5's were left black, whilst those on the shotguns were painted brown using Citadel 'Bestial Brown'. The assault rifle (seen slung over the shoulder of the figure on the far right) was givena base coat of Tamyia 'Olive Drab' and then drybrushed with Humbrol 'Olive Drab' to highlight.
Flesh
This was painted by starting with a basecoat of Citadel 'Dwarf Flesh', shading using a wash of Citadel 'Flesh Wash', and finally drybrushing a highlight using Citadel 'Bronzed Flesh'.
Basing
The base was covered with PVA glue and then dipped in Sharp Sand. Once dry, it was given a coat of Citadel 'Shadow Grey', followed by a wash of Black Ink. It was then given successive lighter highlights of Citadel 'Shadow Grey', Citadel 'Codex Grey' and Citadel 'Fortress Grey'.
Varnishing
The figures were varnished the figures using a single coat of Humbrol Gloss Cote, followed by a single coat of Humbrol Matt Cote.
