Vietnam NVA Painting Guide - An Alternative Approach

Similar to my alternative approach to painting US Infantry, I decided to try a different colour scheme for some NVA as well - going for a later war look, with green uniforms. Again, I tried to accentuate the highlights so that they would be more visible on the tabletop.

Unless otherwise stated, all paints used are acrylics.

Undercoat
The model is undercoated in matt black (I use a spray can of either Citadel Chaos Black, or car body matt black primer)
Tunic, Trousers & Helmets
These were given a basecoat of Coat d'arms 'Military Green', and then drybrushed with GW 'Imperial Strike Green' - remember this one? It's from the old Epic paint set, and is basically a light olive colour - , followed by a light drybrushing of GW 'Camo Green'
Webbing & Boots
This was given a basecoat of Coat d'arms 'Dark Leather', and then drybrushed/highlighted with 3 successively lighter colours: GW 'Beastial Brown', GW 'Snakebite Leather', and finally GW 'Vomit Brown'.
Weapons
The metal areas on the weapons were given a basecoat of GW 'Bolt Gun Metal', followed by a wash of GW 'Armour Wash'. The wooden parts were painted in GW 'Spearstaff Brown', and then given a wash of Brown Ink.
Flesh
This was painted by starting with a basecoat of Coat d'arms 'Oriental Flesh', shaded using a wash of GW 'Chestnut Ink', and finally drybrushing a highlight using Coat d'arms 'Flesh'.
Details
The scarves were given a coat of GW 'Enchanted Blue', followed by alight drybrush of GW 'Electric Blue'.
Basing
The base was covered with PVA glue and then dipped in Sharp Sand. The Sharp Sand is important, as it is very coarse in texture, and there are larger pieces of grit which can be painted as rocks.
Once dry, it was given a coat of GW 'Graveyard Earth', followed by drybrushing with GW 'Snakebite Leather' and GW 'Ash Wastes Grey'. The base was then dabbed randomly with PVA glue and dipped in flock.
As a final touch, I lightly dusted the boots and trousers of the figures with the two highlight colours of the base, just to 'blend' them into the base.
Varnishing
The figures were varnished the figures using a single coat of Humbrol Gloss Cote, followed by a single coat of Humbrol Matt Cote.
