Fallschirmjager Painting Guide

These models were painted using the colours recommended by the uniform guide supplied by Gladiator Games with their catalogue of Coat d'arms paints, but then corrected by using the Osprey Book "Fallschirmjager, German Paratrooper 1935-45".

These models are painted as late-war examples of Fallschirmjager. By this time, the jump smock was produced in Zeltbahn pattern, rather than their earlier green/grey colouring.

Unless otherwise stated, all paints used are acrylics.

Undercoat
The model is undercoated in matt black (I use a spray can of either Citadel Chaos Black, or car body matt black primer)
Camouflage Jump Smock
This was painted to resemble Zeltbahn 31 pattern.
The smock was given a basecoat of Coat d'arms Pale Green, and then geometric patterns were applied using Coat d'arms 'Brick Red' and Coat d'arms 'Military Green'. The result seemed a little light, so after some thought, I then applied a coat of Tamyia 'Smoke' to the tunic - the result can be seen below. 'Smoke' leaves a gloss finish, but this can be corrected by applying matt varnish.

Before After
Trousers
These were given a basecoat of Tamyia 'German Grey', and then drybrushed with Coat d'arms 'Uniform Grey'
Helmets and caps
These were given a basecoat of Tamyia 'Field Blue', and then drybrushed with Coat d'arms 'Field Blue'. (Coat d'arms 'Field Blue' doesn't seem to carry enough blue pigment, in my opinion. The result is much more grey than blue, as can be seen on the original 'Before' and 'After' pictures, which were taken before I changed the helmet colour).
The cap worn by the middle figure was given a basecoat of Tamyia 'Field Grey', and the drybrushed with Coat d'arms 'Green Grey'.
Webbing
The main straps were painted Citadel 'Scorched Brown'.
The ammo pouches were given a basecoat of Coat d'arms 'Slate Grey'. They were then given a wash of Black Ink, followed by a drybrushed highlight of Coat d'arms 'Slate Grey' again.
Other pouches were given a basecoat of Citadel 'Snakebite Leather', followed by a wash of Brown Ink.
Weapons
The metal areas on the weapons were given a basecoat of Citadel 'Bolt Gun Metal', followed by a wash of Citadel 'Armour Wash'.
The wooden areas of the weapons were painted in Citadel 'Spearstaff Brown'.
Boots
These were given a basecoat of Coat d'arms 'Slate Grey'. They were then given a wash of Black Ink, followed by a drybrushed highlight of Coat d'arms 'Slate Grey' again.
Caucasian Flesh
This was painted by starting with a basecoat of Citadel 'Dwarf Flesh', shading using a wash of Citadel 'Flesh Wash', and finally drybrushing a highlight using Citadel 'Bronzed Flesh' and Citadel 'Elf Flesh'.
Details
The helmet straps and weapon slings were painted Citadel 'Chaos Black'.
The handles of the Potato Masher grenades were painted Citadel 'Snakebite Leather'.
The tops of the grenades, and the tops of the water bottles, were painted in Tamyia 'Field Grey', and the drybrushed with Coat d'arms 'Green Grey'.
The main part of the water bottle was painted Citadel 'Scorched Brown'.
The rain cape was given a basecoat of Citadel 'Snakebite Leather', and then had Zeltbahn shapes applied in Coat d'arms 'Brick Red' and Coat d'arms 'Military Green'.
Basing
The base was covered with PVA glue and then dipped in Sharp Sand. Once dry, it was given a coat of Tamyia 'Flat Earth', followed by highlights of Citadel 'Sulphur Desert Yellow' and Citadel 'Fortress Grey'. The base was then dabbed randomly with PVA glue and dipped in flock.
As a final touch, I lightly dusted the boots and trousers of the figures with the two highlight colours of the base, just to 'blend' them into the base.
Varnishing
The figures were varnished the figures using a single coat of Humbrol Gloss Cote, followed by a single coat of Humbrol Matt Cote.
