US Colonial Marines Painting Guide

It is almost impossible to get a still from the film that is not contaminated with coloured lighting, so I was struggling for some good reference material until I remembered that one of my friends had some photos of him in the uniform worn by the character 'Wierzbowski" in the film - bought at a prop auction by a work colleague.

Thanks to Paul Masterson from the 'Painting Guru' Yahoo! group. He sent me a link to a site that has 1/6th scale figures of USCM - link to it HERE

Unless otherwise stated, all paints used are acrylics.

Undercoat
The model is undercoated in matt black (I use a spray can of either Citadel Chaos Black, or car body matt black primer)
Camouflage Tunic and Trousers
This is a four-colour camouflage pattern.
The trousers and tunic were given a base colour of Coat D'Arms 'British Khaki'. The pattern was then applied using the the colours Tamyia 'J.N. Grey' and Tamyia 'Deck Tan'.
Small lines of Tamyia 'Olive Drab' were then applied over the pattern.
The rolled up sleeves were painted in Tamyia 'J.N. Grey'.
Further photos I have seen have led me to believe that I should actually have painted the base colour of the tunic Tamyia 'J.N. Grey', and then used Coat D'Arms 'British Khaki'at one of the pattern colours. I will try this on further models and publish the results.
Camouflage Armour and Helmets
This is a five-colour camouflage pattern.(!)
The armour and helmets were given a base colour of Tamyia 'NATO Green'. Irregular blocks of colour were then applied using Citadel 'Bestial Brown'. A pattern of lines was then applied using the the colours Tamyia 'J.N. Grey', Citadel 'Vomit Brown' and Citadel 'Chaos Black'.
Webbing
This was painted Tamyia 'Black Green', and then drybrushed with Humbrol 'Black Green' and Humbrol 'Dark Green'
Weapons
The metal areas on the weapons were given a basecoat of Citadel 'Bolt Gun Metal', followed by a wash of Citadel 'Armour Wash'.
The other areas of the weapons were painted Tamyia 'Olive Green', and then drybrushed with Humbrol 'Olive Drab' and then Humbrol 'Light Olive'.
The stocks of the weapons were painted black.
Boots
These were left black.
Caucasian Flesh
This was painted by starting with a basecoat of Citadel 'Dwarf Flesh', shading using a wash of Citadel 'Flesh Wash', and finally drybrushing a highlight using Citadel 'Bronzed Flesh'.
Negro Flesh
This was painted by starting with a basecoat of Citadel 'Dark Flesh', shading using a wash of Broen Ink, and finally drybrushing a highlight using 'Dark Flesh'.
Details
The goggles, helmet straps and weapon slings were painted Citadel 'Chaos Black'.
An American flag was painted on the left shoulderof each model. this was done by painting a Citadel 'Skull White' rectangle on the sleeve of the uniform, and then painting a small 'square' in the top left hand corner Citadel 'Enchanted Blue'. Finally, thin stripes of Citadel 'Go Fasta Red' were applied.
Basing
The base was covered with PVA glue and then dipped in Sharp Sand. Once dry, it was given a coat of Tamyia 'Flat Earth', followed by highlights of Citadel 'Sulphur Desert Yellow' and Citadel 'Fortress Grey'. The base was then dabbed randonly with PVA glue and dipped in flock.
As a final touch, I lightly dusted the boots and trousers of the figures with the two highlight colours of the base, just to 'blend' them into the base.
Varnishing
The figures were varnished the figures using a single coat of Humbrol Gloss Cote, followed by a single coat of Humbrol Matt Cote.
