Because the chassis of a Caterham becomes
quite narrow towards the front, I faced some severe packaging problems
when designing the front suspension. The real car uses springs
mounted directly to the lower wishbone, but this results in the suspension
of the Lego model being too soft. I therefore use a pushrod in place
of this spring, acting on a rocker which in turn acts on a vertically
mounted spring in the middle of the chassis. The chassis in this
area is constructed of many half beams and some angle beams.
One of the hardest problems I had to
overcome was mounting the front mud guards. These are mounted to the
hub carrier, and hence move with the front wheels when they are steered or
the suspension is compressed. I had to resort to using a single Lego
elastic band each side to remove some wobbliness! The
final photo shows the front end of the vehicle with the engine cover
and the upper section of the nose-cone removed.
