Email marketing is a cheap and effective way of talking to your customers. I have used Outlook and Act systems running on my own PC but they are quite awkward to get what I want and there is no way of knowing how many people have opened the email.

A while ago I switched to using Vertical Response and I love it. It's really easy to set up email lists and there is quite a nice screen for creating the email itself with text and pictures.

Once you have sent the email it keeps track of how many people of opened it and how many have clicked on any links - usually back to the website I'm promoting. It also handles invalid emails - called bounces - and people unsubscribing - not nice but you have to allow it.

The outlay is pretty low too as it only costs $15 for 1,000 emails sent i.e less than 1p per email. Yes it is in dollars but your credit card will sort it out.
