Bingham Folk Club June 4th 2010
Neil and Julie Smith from Mansfield have been regular and popular floor singers at Bingham Folk Club for many a year, this being their first feature night. Over the last few years Neil has turned his hand to song writing, some of his songs based on his observations of our modern computerised lives, “I Sold All My Love On Ebay” for example. “Write Upon His Wall” apparently refers to Facebook – something your reviewer is unfortunately not familiar with!
Neil obviously feels for the working man, reflected in the words of “Workers Always Take The Blame”, and our modern eating habits are also catered for in “Chicken Tikka Blues.” I think only one song out of the whole set had not been penned by Neil, this being the ever popular “Someday Soon” written by Ian Tyson, and one that Julie and Neil have always done particularly well in my opinion.
All in all, a good night was enjoyed by the audience, with Neil’s competent guitar accompaniments complementing Julie’s happy, confident singing style.
