waoc.org.uk or homepage.ntlworld.com?

Well, you got here. But how? via http://waoc.org.uk or via http://homepage.ntlworld.com/n.humphries/waoc. And does it really matter?

Currently WAOC's website resides on a server owned by ntlworld, and the real address for our site is http://homepage.ntlworld.com/n.humphries/waoc which you may continue to use. However, we also have a new address: http://waoc.org.uk which we recommend instead.

Note that the address is .org.uk, not .org

You can also get here via http://www.waoc.org.uk (ie. the "www." is optional in our address.)

This new address automatically routes you through to wherever the website currently resides: If you look at the address box at the top of your browser, you should see that it still shows a clara.net address, even if you accessed the site via the waoc.org.uk address.

There are advantages and some disadvantages of using the new address:

Advantages

  • It is easier to remember and advertise.

  • It will still work if we move our website to another server. (We'll just change the waoc.org.uk address to point to the new server.)

Disadvantages

  • You cannot refer directly to an individual page within the website. eg. You cannot refer to http://waoc.org.uk/events.htm to go straight to our fixtures list page.

  • It is a bit harder to "bookmark" the waoc.org.uk address.

If you try to, you'll find you're actually bookmarking the underlying clara.net address. However it is possible to bookmark the waoc.org.uk address, and this is explained below.

It is probably wise to bookmark the waoc.org.uk address if you can, as this will continue to work if we move the website to another server, whereas your bookmarks to clara.net addresses will fail when this happens.

  • Related to both the above, you cannot bookmark individual pages on the website using the waoc.org.uk address at all. (You can, of course, continue to do so using the ntlworld address.)

We believe that the advantages of the waoc.org.uk address outweigh the disadvantages, and encourage you to use it in future (always accessing the website through the home-page of course) and to bookmark it for even greater ease.
