The WAOC summer gallopen is a series of low-key summer evening events, taking place on Wednesday evenings. The format of the events varies from event to event: some may be the usual, "follow a course" format (but with only two or three courses), some may be score events ( where you have to locate as many controls as you can in a limited amount of time ), and others may have devious variations (eg. brown-only maps, with only the contour features marked on them.) For more information about future gallopen events, follow this link.
The events comprise a league. Points are awarded for each event, yielding gallopen winners for each category (junior male, junior female, senior male, senior female, veteran male, veteran female). This is an effort league so points are awarded simply for taking part. Someone competing in all the events will accumulate a reasonable score regardless of their ability.

A score event with mystery Norwegian controls 60 minutes limit, maximum 355 points. About 8km to get the lot. A wet, thundery wild night and a wild and tulgey wood. Lots of whiffling and burbling was had by all, especially Rolf.

Note that these results don't reflect positions or points for the Gallopen league as competitors went to different numbers of controls. One of the rules was that the challenge was a score event with 50 minutes and -10 points per 30 seconds over, hence the points column. I have no idea how Hally is going to convert these results to Gallopen points.
The Matrix was supposed to look like
W A O C
E U R O
A R E A
L A S T
which spells words both vertically and horizontally. A weal is the raised mark left on the skin after a blow from an angry orienteer.
Thanks to everyone for running, as a good turnout always makes the planner happy. I'll bring some blank maps to the next event for those on the challenge course who want reminding.
The controls were designed to be unappealing to vandals, but that turned out not to be case at controls 8 and 16. I hope that didn't spoil anyones run and I've tried to adjust the scores where necessary. Much thanks to Fred and Neil who rapidly replaced the markers.
Keep O'ing, Rolf

There are some interesting results on the long course. 3 finishers in as many seconds. 7 of the legs were followed by an extra leg along a short compass bearing. Janis's performance shows that you found this quite a challenge, especially so when the local youths were quite inventive in placing controls on parallel features!

A really evil one by Steve requiring far more brain power than I have left after a day at work! Well done Steve and thanks.

With the wet weather preceding the event and knowing the difficulties with the steep slopes at Harlton in the wet, I must thank the hardy individuals for turning up to compete.
Congratulations to Peter Gardner for his impressive performance on the Score Maze. Perhaps you only get confused as you get older!!
