This Event was a first in two major respects. It was the first time that WAOC had tried overprinted maps for a colour-coded event. Special thanks are due to Fred Northrop for an excellent map with overprinted courses and control descriptions alongside. There was a problem in predicting numbers for an enter-on-the-day event, resulting in many surplus maps - but reaction on the whole seems to have been favourable. Profuse thanks also to Alan Milne for help with the equipment and to Mary Palmer the organiser - it was very reassuring to see the WAOC team swinging once more into action, and taking in its stride the changes consequent upon pre-printed maps, plus map exchange and manned control to boot.
The other first was for me, in planning a full colour-coded event - indeed it has been many years since I planned an event at all. So I was most grateful to Roger Williams the controller for his many helpful suggestions. I tried to provide plenty of route choice on the longer courses, especially over the E-W ridges in the centre of the map and in the more complex hilly area to the North. Times for these courses turned out somewhat on the long side, perhaps because of climb through the be-brackened central areas. Apart from that, the main lesson I learned was that placing the start triangle at the obvious ride-path junction was a poor decision for the junior courses. Many competitors on White and Yellow found orienting themselves at that Start junction the hardest problem of the whole course. In retrospect, the Start should have been further into the forest NW of the main ride.
Chris Morley (WAOC)
We were caught out by the difficulty of the Start Triangle on the junior courses.The red ink used in the over printing did tend to blend with the Open land at times. For me the event was summed up by a TVOC competitor who said he had throughly enjoyed the courses. When he then added he had never run at Rowney before it goes to show that all Chris's efforts to try and give "repeat competitors" a different choice is never lost on the first time visitor. All WAOC’s efforts went down well with those who visited this "Oh too small gem of runnable forest"
