Organisers Comments
So 4 weeks after the severe gales, the Rowney event actually went
ahead. We should all be grateful to our fixtures secretary, Mike
Capper, who moved quickly to get the permissions for our event and to
Forest Enterprise for clearing up the devastation and allowing us in
again..
My biggest problem was finding helpers. Despite having a team lined
up for the cancelled event on 27th October, it was still difficult to form
a new team for this event. Special thanks to those who actually
volunteered, especially Cath Pennington. I kept Cath as my special
reserve and on the day she ably filled several gaps in the team.
Some of you might be amazed by the large tent erected over the String
course. I was more surprised by the huge number of takers - we
actually exhausted the map supply and those who had a go without maps were
actually faster!
The fact that 214 of you turned up to enjoy the day made it worthwhile for
myself, the planner and controller who had to do it all again.
Bruce Marshall (WAOC)
Planners Comments
Thanks to all of you who came. We got there in the end and the day
stayed mainly dry. It was good to see so many new names in the results and
so many families taking part. I hope that you all enjoyed your day out
that we will see you again soon.
I had a definite feeling of relief rather than disappointment when
the original event had to be postponed due to the gales in October. We had
over half the controls out but all of us in the wood had seen trees or
large branches falling.
The forestry commission had done a good job in clearing many of the
paths in the four intermediate week. I apologise to anyone on the yellow
course whose navigation was thrown by a tree still across a path between
controls 6 and 7 - I did not find this until I was collecting in the
controls.
Thanks to the controller, Norman King, for his unflustered support in
planning this, my first full colour coded event. I have realised that even
simple things like where you put the tags need to be discussed to aid
efficiency. Many thanks to all those who helped put out and collect in my
controls, without helpers it would be difficult on short winter days to
complete the task in daylight hours.
The Rowney Warren map is due for remapping. One of the main advantages of
the storms is that we can probably remove most of the now dubious
rootstocks marked on the map and add a new set. Also many of the shallow
depressions have also become filled over the years.
Future planners, organisers at Rowney Warren may have to consider ways of
communicating our presence to the cyclists. A number of runner received
complaints from cyclists in the northern part of the woods. There was
apparently no organised cycling event on in the woods on that day and I
had avoided putting any controls in the part of wood where the slalom runs
have been built. Late runners unfortunately found that control 106 in an
adjacent area had disappeared - an area popular with orienteers and
cyclists due to its technicality.
Nicola Gardner (WAOC )
Controllers Comments
As many of you will know we had to postpone the previous event. On the
Saturday before the event the forecast was for high winds on the Sunday.
Nicola went into Rowney on the Saturday and no problems were seen and when
I first got to Rowney at 7am it was windy but not too bad. From 8am
onwards the wind increased and branches were starting to fall. At just
after 9am Nicola, Bruce and I agreed it was too
dangerous.
Subsequent visits to Rowney proved the decision was correct.
Thence we came to part two. This was Nicola's first planning event. I know
she did an excellent job. I did not have to make many suggestions. From
the comments after the courses they were very complimentary. Rowney always
fascinates me and I enjoy being there. The removal of the woods near
the finish I don't believe has had too much of a detriment on the area.
There were four incidents of note. Control 115 for some reason
"died" on us and I had to replace it. Also, Control 106 late on
in the day was removed by persons unknown. I asked some of the cyclists if
they'd seen anyone remove it and nobody had. I could not find it anywhere.
All Orienteers affected have been reinstated.
Also the area of the map between 106 and 101 (slalom course) is clearly
going to have to be out-of-bounds in future, even though we had the woods
for the day, ad-hoc cyclists still use the slalom course. Whilst I was
collecting in controls, Control 103 was not in the place I had put it in
the morning, it had been moved about 30 metres East.
My thanks to Bruce, always calm and to Nicola who was nervous but carried
out a splendid job, again it was a pleasure to control for WAOC.
